New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks
The New York Times ^ | May 30, 2012 | MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM

New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

"WTH has happened to this country?"

You are now to be governed. (With all the nuances that that entails.)

Careful, they might take you seriously.

Relax, if anything I have merely stumbled upon their years old plans. They probably already have designs in the works, it is pretty much just merging the ever expanding TSA and Subway sandwiches. Add some dotted lines on the org chart and a new public/private partnership is born.

While we all joke, seriously - WTH has happened to this country?

The Management and Government courses at Ivy League schools started borrowing from the Animal Husbandry courses at Ag schools.

Just dry runs to acclimate you to authority in the coming FEMA re-education camps. The people will have been converted into the desired sheeple when the time comes to open the camps.

The left took over our schools and dumbed down the population to the point where the door was open for power-mad azzholes such as Bloomberg...

This is so fun to watch, from a distance.

Last year my rich uncle moved from NY to Miami Beach, FL, and the tax savings paid for his new place.

And New Yorkers are leaving in droves. If they don’t have their hands in your pockets, they’re covering your mouth.
What a bunch of sheepherders.

I had to buy a coke and put a double shot of whiskey in it just to calm down so I could sleep.

LOL, soon, no coke or whiskey allowed there! :)

Seriously though, that's what I was thinking... Just like in the City of SF, you pretty much don't see any overweight natives/locals.

You’re missing the point. They’re taking into account that some people will try to get around it. You’ll be dealt with eventually if you think you can keep ahead of their laws.

The goal is total control, and if it means banning big sizes, then banning small sizes, then taxing it like cigarettes, then banning it altogether, then making smuggling it across state lines a crime, then making mere possession a crime, then making it a crime not to turn somebody in who has some, or might have some, then that’s what they’ll do.

This kind of thing has to be fought head-on, not tiptoed around while we quietly giggle and marvel at our own cleverness.

When NY got tough on smoking all the cigarette makers should have refused to sell their product in NY. One month and they’d have cried ‘uncle’!

I was 11 in 1970. There are many here older than I.

I am wondering just what the hell happened here, that's for damn sure. No time machine necessary.

"the tax savings paid for his new place."

In the name of full disclosure and for real facts.
The tax savings by moving out of NY will pay for 14.75% of the new place in Miami Beach.

Still a pretty good deal.
