Scientists invent 'cannabis without the high'

Israeli scientists have cultivated a cannabis plant that doesn't get people stoned in a development that may help those smoking marijuana for medical purposes, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

According to the Maariv daily, the new cannabis looks, smells and even tastes the same, but does not induce any of the feelings normally associated with smoking marijuana that are brought on by the substance THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol.

"It has the same scent, shape and taste as the original plant -- it's all the same -- but the numbing sensation that users are accustomed to has disappeared," said Tzahi Klein, head of development at Tikkun Olam, the firm that developed the species.

And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed (Gen. 12:3)

I have always had doubts about the medical use of marijuana. Is it really beneficial or just an excuse to get high? The Israelis have put those doubts to sleep!

Agree with you. I am for legalization of marijuana but from a stand point of personal liberty. I detest the “medical marijuana” argument; they need to just come clean and admit they want to smoke a plant. Quit jading the debate with sophistry.

It really does help quell the nausea associated with chemotherapy, and also slows down the progression of glaucoma.

Those are two valid uses, and the sufferers would probably welcome the relief without the incapacity.

Having the crop made “drug free” is great news for hemp production. Back before it was banned, hemp was a low cost rival to cotton.

“a cannabis plant that doesn’t get people stoned”

What’s the point? That’s like beer without alcohol-only useful if you like to pee a lot.

Hemp plants can be used to produce a very good fabric and paper from the woody fibre. It is very prolific and will grow in poor soil and could be used also for fuel alchol. And then there is always the rope.

I thought is was the THC in marijuana that provided those beneficial effects. Isn’t this new weed THC free?

So will all the people who bore us to death with their ‘practical uses of hemp’ nonsense which is a weak attempt to legitimize the cultivation of cannabis. Oops, they planted the ‘wrong kind’ in that 1/4 acre of the farm. Guess it’ll have to be smoked away....

In the fwiw department, there are about 2,000 acres of hemp north of Junction City KS that produces no THC. How do I know this? I was stationed at Ft. Riley in the early 70's.
