OAKLAND ( CBS / AP) — Oakland officials were trying to reduce the number of guns in the city by offering a gift card to any Oakland resident who turns in a gun.

As part of a gun buyback program, the city was handing out $100 gift cards to residents who handed over a working gun at the Oakland Police Department Saturday.

California is one of the few states that does not allow the private sale of firearms. All legal sales must be done through a dealer and recorded. This means that in silly gun buy ups like this, private citizens are not allowed to offer market prices to the ignorant who turn in valuable firearms for pennies on the dollar.

I think all these stupid programs do is exacerbate crime.

The criminals are NOT going to turn in their guns - no, they're going to steal someone else's and sell that to the moronic police and their "no questions asked" buy-back programs

Best case the weapon is reported stolen and recovered IF the police put two and two together - which I am less and less confident they are capable of doing - and the city (i.e. taxpayer) loses the money to the thief.

In other words, this offer for transaction would be ILLEGAL if done by mere peasants. But, government agents operate under a different set of laws.

California Leftists LOVE silly laws. Typical of their mentality, they consider a problem solved if a law is passed--nevermind its enforceability or even its wisdom if its intention is benevolent.

Leftists LOVE to load the legal system with innumerable laws that cannot possibly be enforced. That allows selective enforcement: If they like you, you get off free. If they don't, they can destroy you.

BTW, do you think the criminals will turn in stolen guns but keep their own???

"The criminals are NOT going to turn in their guns - no, they're going to steal someone else's and sell that to the moronic police"

Yet another way to disarm the law abiding and keep guns in the hands of the criminals.

Leftists' logic is about as meaningful as their "new morality" and "higher truth.

I imagine the $100 coupon is good for a Starbucks “Trenta”, one Java Chip Frappucino, plus 16 shots of espresso, a shot of soy milk, a drop of caramel flavoring, a scoop of banana puree, another scoop of strawberry puree, a few vanilla beans, a dash of Matcha powder, some protein powder and a caramel and mocha drizzle to cap it off.

The drink is real, and by itself is $23.60. The rest of the cost, it being California, is eaten up by state and local taxes.

1,400 mg of caffeine and a seemingly incalculable amount of sugar, which should take out of the gene pool anyone stupid enough to give away their gun for $100.

How about offering a hundred bucks for bringing in a wanted felon? Better yet, they could offer a hundred bucks for bringing in a pair of shoes. I’m pretty sure that criminals wear shoes. I’ve watched thos COPS show. Take away their shoes, especially in the winter. Makes as much sense.

How do you demonstrate that it is actually a working gun? Do they test fire it? Do they do ballistics to see if it is a gun previously used in a crime?

They did not have to check out many. The program was a complete bust. Only 12 guns were collected. I saw no pictures, so they were probably beat up or single shot shotguns or .22 rifles.

This shows that people in Oakland are not as gullible as the anti-freedom forces thought.
