Sorry, I’m not convinced.
I think it is easy to point to where we have spent stunning amounts of taxpayer dollars to solve this problem and we should question the ROI. But the alternative of not attempting to limit drug use (or worse, legalizing it) doesn’t sound very promising either.
Why not honor the Tenth Amendment and let the states decide intrastate drug policies?

I’d imagine after almost 4 years of Obama, that it’s ONLY 56% of Americans wanting to get stoned (rimshot).
Kidding aside, I’ve got some skin in this game. I have friends and family members who battle (or... battled) addiction. Screwed up their lives. Wish I had the answer to this problem...

Because explaining how marijuana is safer than alcohol is way to easy.

Alcohol is not the only drug included within DUI, DWI, and BUI, and BWI. For 2009 the CDC reports, ‘...drugs other than alcohol (e.g., marijuana and cocaine) are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths. These other drugs are often used in combination with alcohol’ Almost 1 in 5 DEATHS that year, not a number we should enable becoming larger wouldn’t you say?
Assuming such DWI crimes were (and perhaps in some jurisdictions are) exclusive to alcohol - are you saying that marijuana users never drive under the influence of POT? Or that the effect of being stoned has no impairing effect on a drivers reaction time, decision making, etc.? Don’t believe there’s a difference driving with a beer buzz or a pot buzz - the driver becomes a danger to himself and others.
As to your claimed number of marijuana overdoses being equal to zero, I don’t have access to your source for this statistic (please send unless it was manufactured for argument sake). Taking the assumption the statistic is correct, are you also arguing there’s no health risks? Or, that use, infrequent or abusive, will never lead to a disabling or fatal condition?

I’d have to agree with the #6 reply on that string you linked. It seems a stretch to conclude that legalizing medical marijuana led to fewer traffic fatalities. I don’t see the correlation proven.
I replied on this thread earlier today with a CDC stat showing 18% of 2009 DWI fatalities involved other drugs. Would seem unlikely that legalizing marijuana would somehow favorably influence this stat, wouldn’t it?
As a Conservative, I absolutely agree that it should be up to the States to decide. And, if such legalization were proposed here in TX, I’d fight it.
