Chevrolet Volt 'Comes Out' For Detroit's LGBT Pride Weekend
thecarconnection.com ^ | 5 June 2012 | Richard Read

Posted on 06/05/2012 1:07:55 PM PDT by smokingfrog

On June 28, 1969, gays, lesbians, and their transgendered friends took to the streets of New York, protesting the harassment they'd experienced at the hands of the city's police force. The violence -- now known as the Stonewall Riots -- lasted for several days and altered the way that Americans viewed their LGBT neighbors.

Forty-three years down the road, things have changed dramatically. We have an array of LGBT characters on TV and in movies. We have a president who's come out in favor of marriage equality. And with only a couple of exceptions, most of America's major corporations -- 86% to be exact -- have anti-discrimination HR policies to protect their lesbian and gay workers.

So, it shouldn't really come as a surprise when automakers sign on as sponsors of city-wide LGBT pride events, as Chevrolet did this past weekend for Motor City Pride in Detroit. In fact, it was Chevy's second year on the sponsor board, and it was joined by Ford, Chrysler, and the UAW.

No, what comes as a surprise is that Chevrolet would put so much thought into the advertising they do around such events. Case in point: the above piece for the Chevy Volt, which ran in Between the Lines, a Detroit-based LGBT newspaper.

How will the Volt run, if the wrong thing is put into the wrong orifice? (E.g. if you plug your electrical probe into the gas hole.)

Henry Ford is rolling over in his grave.

Nah, Henry Ford is laughing all the way to the bank.

This will send even more people in middle America Ford's way. And both Chevy and Ford make some of their best margins on the trucks the Evil Conservatives buy. For Ford at least, the truck business was 33% of the units and close to 50% of the revenue last I heard.

Reminds me of a gag on The Simpsons -- not exactly a right-wing show -- long ago in which Homer and Bart go through an amusement-park ride sponsored by Big Oil. The audio-animatronic show informs them that, if one chooses to drive an electric car, "People will think you're gay." Then, because the amusement-park car they're riding in IS electric, three stereotypical guys call out to them, "One of us ... One of us ... "

The only smart thing they did with that car - put the receptacle on the driver’s side front fender.

I remember the old cars with the gas tank filler in the back behind the license plate. You don’t see that any more. Too many people driving off at the gas station with the hose still in the tank, maybe. I still can’t figure out how car designers decide which side of the car to put the gas filler cap. I’ve always thought it should be on the driver’s side.

Indeed. I doubt many Americans outside of NYC even knew what that was. I figured they were more concerned with their own personal lives, the Moon landing and Vietnam in the summer of ‘69.

They should do some targeted advertizing for the LGBT community. Like “Strap a Volt on your ass” or some such. Big-boy’s battery-powered toys.

A queer car for queers.

1969: Queers say, "Stay out of my bedroom!"
2012: Queers say, "Celebrate my queerness!"

Shut up and go back into your bedrooms, closets and caves.

While it is inaguably gay, it doesn't really fit the LGBT template. I've driven one, and it's quiet.

There's more potential Volt customers who would be repelled by such an ad than there are homosexuals who would buy one because of it.

Nice idiotic move by Chevy marketers to further marginalize the idea of electric cars.

Riots over the police closing of a mob-run speakeasy.

Then again, gay men HAVE long been drama queens about their lives.
