High School Runner Carries Opponent Across Finish Line
ABC News ^ | Jun 5, 2012

As Meghan Vogel turned for home during Saturday’s Ohio Division III girls state meet, she was in last place in the 3,200-meter race with no hope of finishing anywhere near the top. But her last-place finish became the most memorable part of the meet.

With 20 meters to go, Vogel, a junior at West Liberty-Salem High School in Urbana, was about to pass Arden McMath, a sophoomore from Arlington High School, when McMath collapsed on the track. Rather than continue running, Vogel helped McMath to her feet, placed McMath’s arm around her shoulders and carried her across the finish line.

“Any girl on the track would have done the same for me,” Vogel told ESPN.

Vogel made sure McMath crossed the finish line first and said she was surprised by the praise she received for an act of selflessness she believed was anything but extraordinary.

“It’s strange to have people telling me that his was such a powerful act of kindness and using words like ‘humanity,’” she told ESPN. “When I hear words like that I think of Harriet Tubman and saving people’s lives. I don’t consider myself a hero. I just did what I knew was right and what I was supposed to do.”

Under the rules, a runner is automatically disqualified for helping another runner during a race,

I think some people are just mimicking what Rush said without really thinking it through.

At least she was near last anyway (14th?). Often at these types of meets the top 8 or so may score points for the team. If it was top 16 who scored then she hurt her team by getting herself DQed.

“Rush made a big deal about this “

I heard that. He was getting in touch with his inner Ayn Rand, who notoriously regarded charity as unimportant.

I fault the adults who were supposed to be looking out for the well being of the athletes. Anyone who's taken a first aid course knows about the dangers of heat stroke.

It's just plain common sense that you don't let them keep exerting themselves.

Thanks for the lecture Church Lady.

My sarcasm was in response to the idea that the rules were put in place in case one of the contestants had a heart attack. They weren’t.

This story stirs the romantic notion in many people that you don’t leave your teammate/squad mate behind. Thank God that this girl wasn’t suffering a significant medical situation.

I know you were mocking the earlier post, but the way you did it didn’t work.

I know you were mocking the earlier post, but the way you did it didn’t work.

The post in question got positve feedback from multiple posters, and you seem to be the only person who couldn't handle it. Is it possible that it doesn't work for people with a stick up their a$$? I'm just saying.

Sorry if my comment was over your head, but I can assure you I do not have a stick up my a$$. There was nothing wrong with what the girl did and plenty that was right about it.

Back in the 2008 campaign, Rush would often speak of how it appeared that McCain's heart wasn't in the race. I distinctly remember Rush, on several occasions, using the phrase, "drag him across the finish line."

I guess it wasn't a bad thing back then.

I think this was a dumb idea on several accounts, and IMHO, the health examples are good ones. I think the losing runner might have been showboating, and did not treat the fallen runner with the respect she deserved. I wonder if this girl would have stopped had she been surging ahead in the top three.

This was a competition, and if I’d been the girl who fell, I think I would have been disappointed and humiliated enough, and probably swatted the “do-gooder” away. If I collapsed due to health issues, I’d thank her not to inexpertly judge my condition and proceed hauling my ass down the track to the cheers or jeers of the crowd.

If I’m a competitor, please afford me the dignity to stand or fall on my own. If I’m walking across a parking lot to my car and I fall, I will be most appreciative of your help.

The fact that you think your lame response was "over my head" is documentation of the the stick and its situation.

Isn't there a HS track runner you could be debfibrillating somewhere?

I heard Rush talking about this and sent him an email saying almost the same thing. I told him that I think the ONLY reason she stopped to help the girl across the line was because she was already in dead last place, had nothing to gain by finishing 2nd to last place.

She had already won the 1600 meters earlier, so she had nothing to prove. If she would have been in contention for a medal, you can BET she would've let the medical personnel or someone else help the girl out.

Yeah, you’re right, though it made me think, why a heart attack and not a lung collapse, for example?

What about SOHCMRSA? How come nobody ever thinks about THAT? BOTH girls could have died. Amputations galore!

I think young Meghan was totally irresponsible, and should be sent to a Pelosi Youth re-education camp to get her mind right.

I think that those who condone her behaviour are like liberals - only caring about good intentions as opposed to consequences. What if she was having issues with her heart and she killed her by dragging her across the finish?

I can think more than a few Marines that would be glad to have her on their team.

I dunno. She probably helped out her team a great deal with that first-place finish in the 1600.

impimp, you've got to quit getting your "news" from the likes of GAyBCNews or the other ObamaNationPropaganda outlets. The GAyBC article follows The Narrative, and leaves out other important facts.

I get my news from The UK Daily Mail (They Didn't Get The WH FAX/memo!) or RT (Russia Today) (Max Keiser & Lauren Lyster for the politically incorrect economic news!).

The heart-warming picture that inspired millions: Photo of high school runner who carries opponent across finish line becomes internet sensation
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2155133/Meghan-Vogel-Inspiring-photo-shows-Ohio-runner-help-carry-competitor-finish-line.html

...Ms Vogel, who had won the 1,600-meter race earlier, said she was emotional and tired from that when she began the longer race...

The UK Daily Mail also usually has scads of good pictures, too. The American "news" outlets skimp on the pictures because it's harder to control the message when the proles can make their own visual judgments.

Seems to me your lame response indicates you have a few problems.

Suggestion: Take a trip to Fire Island. Find someone to remove the stick from your rectum. Relax a while on the beach. Find some semblance of a sense of humor. Get over yourself.

Then, and only then, will I solicit your diagnosis of my "problems." To review: Multiple posters to this thread got the joke. And liked it. Your feelings got hurt. Now you're trying to fight your way out of your own private tar baby. Let it go Kimosabe.
