EU sees dramatic surge in investment from China

In what has been called “a definite turning point,” China’s direct investment in Europe over the last couple of years has multiplied by a factor 10, according to a new study.

EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht welcomed the news, saying that “we need the money.”

“Our dataset shows a profound post-2008 surge,” says the new study, presented on Thursday (7 June) in Brussels by consultancy firm Rhodium Group. “From €700 million yearly 2004-2008, to roughly €2.3 billion in 2009 and 2010, to €7.4 billion in 2011.”

Most of that money went to France—with more than €4.5 billion in investment over the last decade—the UK (€3 billion), and Germany (€2 billion).

Outliers are Hungary (€1.7 billion) and Greece (€571 million), who according to the study both attracted one large-scale investment from China: Hungary in its chemical sector and Greece in the port of Piraeus.

The study adds that even though the numbers remain small compared to the EU’s total inward foreign investment—around 3 percent—“the change in trend line is what matters.”

Over the next decade, it says, “even if Chinese outflows underperform, an annual average of $20-30 billion (€16-24 billion) [of direct investment in Europe] would be expected”—which would amount to an annual inflow greater than total investment over the last decade.

“This is definitely a turning point,” Daniel Rosen, a partner at Rhodium Group and co-author of the report, told EUobserver in an interview. …

The Chinese have to spend our money somewhere while it’s still worth something, so why not use it to buy Europe? It’s on sale now, and it’s a buyer’s market. Some might even call it a fire sale.

As if we didn’t already have enough trouble with Islam and
Marxism, suddenly, Mao shows his ugly face.

I wasn’t a deep political thinker back when Kissinger took Nixon to meet Mao, but I had a gut feeling it wasn’t a good idea. I never could have imagined how our “leaders” would allow the Chinese to punk us the way they have, while helping them build the machine they need to become the next, and only superpower.

If one wants to ponder what the world looks l00 years from now, it’s not out of the question to imagine that all future seats of local, State and Federal Governments will be in the Chinatown district, wherever that may be.

Meanwhile, the great unwashed masses, “us” will still be out here supporting them while they tell us how to live our lives.

I had never thought about it before I read this article, but this country looks so much different than the one I grew up in, perhaps the best advice I could give my grandchildren is to not have children.

Nope; the world will certainly become multipolar, and that’s a war footing instead. There won’t be a Pax Sinica; even though the EU is cozying up, they’ve got the industrial base to rebound, which ain’t good news for us either, but there you go. Besides, the EU is prolonging their fiscal “crisis” for as long as it takes to bully the rest of the continent to agree to their imperialistic fiscal/political union; and that’s something we should have stepped in and stopped.
