Paul Krugman used to be an eminent economist, a Nobel Prize winner and Princeton professor. But something happened to him, and his role as a New York Times columnist seems to have captured his soul. He is in the thrall of Keynsianism, the faith that government spending will cure all ills, debt be damned.
Accordingly, Krugman cannot abide a successful economic recovery driven by cutting government spending so the private sector can regain its footing, generate profits and jobs (the two are related). So it rankled Krugman to see Toomas Hendrik Ilves, president of Estonia and a successful advocate of government austerity, accorded the role of exemplar of common sense economics.
Thus, he posted this snarky blog denigrating Estonia's performance.
Ilves responded on Twitter. Joshua Keating of Foreign Policy noticed and reprinted the tweets:

Let's write about something we know nothing about & be smug, overbearing & patronizing: after all, they're just wogs:http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/06/estonian-rhapsdoy/
Guess a Nobel in trade means you can pontificate on fiscal matters & declare my country a "wasteland". Must be a Princeton vs Columbia thing [Ilves went to Columbia for undergrad.]
But yes, what do we know? We're just dumb & silly East Europeans. Unenlightened. Someday we too will understand. Nostra culpa.
Let's sh*t on East Europeans: their English is bad, won't respond & actually do what they've agreed to & reelect govts that are responsible.

WHO DO YOU BELIEVE, THE PRESIDENT OR THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PROFESSOR?
I love it. Krugman is an elitist scumbag.
Others who have won the Nobel Prize: A. Gore and B. Obama.
Estonia, Latvia, Bulgaria and others have first hand experience dealing with commies and socialists. My first encounter with a Latvian and an Estonian was unforgettable. The Latvian was a CMSgt in the AF teaching at the US Army intel school at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. This guy was a serious human being whose hate for the Russian communists and the concept of socialism was radical. He had watched as the Soviets took his father out in back of the family house and shot him. Whew! He made me appear to be a Bill Clinton. His lovely wife was from Estonia and she had even less use for communism. While my wife and I were stationed at the Fort, we were constant dinner guests and when we came to Thailand, sent them a Thai ruby that replaced the one their daughter had lost. These people are serious anti-communists!
While teaching at a large Catholic university in Thailand, I met a Bulgarian world-class pianist who was teaching at the university. As teachers we had to proctor tests so during one of the three hour proctoring periods I got to talk to this lady. Whew! She was even more outspoken than our friends in Arizona. She stated that all people who were in the communist government before in Bulgaria, should be taken out and shot to forever rid the Bulgarian people of any semblance of socialism and communism. She called it the worst philosophy the world had ever known. Her hatred for the Soviets was way too intense for me but was she a fascinating personality. These Central European people are seriously hard-core! Paul is in way over his head on this one.
He does look a little like Frank Burns.
My apologies to competent teacher for using the Mencken quote. I know it is a broad generalization.
Krugman is a follower of the notorious sociopath, John Maynard Keynes. To learn more about the guru & his bogus economics: Keynes & The Keynesians.
