Jurors Friday sentenced Johoan Rodriguez, a Mexican citizen in Houston illegally, to 55 years in prison for the drunk driving crash that killed a Houston police officer last year. He will have to serve at least half of that time before he is eligible for parole.
Rodriguez, 27, pleaded guilty Monday to intoxication manslaughter, after hitting Kevin Will, a 38-year-old officer who was standing on the North Loop investigating a different drunk driving wreck.
Jurors heard almost a weeks worth of evidence before being asked to determine the appropriate punishment.
The defendant cried out and sobbed at hearing the decision while Wills widow wept.

I wonder if the sentence will be the same for a non-LEO victim?
There is no parole!
When a person misuses a firearm in public, it is confiscated. The same should occur with drunk drivers’ cars.
I must be dense.....what is LEO?
If you are a registered City of Houston voter AND registered. Please ACT by signing our two petitions at www.stopthemagnet.com. SPREAD THE WORD to others you know in HOUSTON,TX. Thank You!
Law Enforcement Officer.
If a cop kills somebody, like beating a diabetic to death the cop gets promoted.
A drunk kills your kid the drunk gets 8-10 years.
A drunk kills a gubment thug the drunk gets 55 years, the world weeps, education funds are set up.
Weep, weep, weep. Swaggering gubment cheese swilling union thugs deserve scorn only.
It’s about time these drunk drivers get time in prison but they haven’t in the past. This poor officer lost both legs on impact. I pray he didn’t suffer. Too many law enforcement officers along with too many citizens have been victims of these stinkin’ drunk drivers. Enough already!!
Thanks to Jorge Busho for a flood of murderous vermin. I hope you sleep well.
Yeah...what he said.
No,no. Justice should have had this ILLEGAL deported the day he came here.
Seems his cry-baby act saved him from a life sentence.
Kinda like a SCORPIO or a SAGGITARIUS.
Rest in peace, Officer Will, you are now in the hands of God Almighty. And may the Holy Ghost provide comfort and healing to your family.
I’d be extremely interested in knowing if he’d ever been pulled over for drunk driving before, or even just pulled over for speeding by one of the badged tax collectors in Houston, then let back out on the street because he’s an illegal who doesn’t have to follow our laws.
Gee DariusBane, sounds like you have a problem with LEO’s. I suggest you not call one if you’re ever in trouble....(or could it be you’ve been in trouble thus the attitude?).
Before I knew what a LEO was, I posted my disgust for drunken drivers who kill and maim LEO’s as well as the general public. I’d like to think that it doesn’t make any difference but I’m sure some fall through the cracks just like murderers by other means get acquitted......like OJ.
If only we’d give the max to every illegal then maybe, just maybe they’d think twice about crossing over here. It’s come down to putting the monkey on their backs since ICE can’t seem to do the job.
“(or could it be youve been in trouble thus the attitude?)”
Come on. You can do better than that. Non sequitur:
If a person questions the modern role of Police that is evidence that the person making the assertion is in some way a criminal.
That is old and tiresome. That argument gets trotted out without fail.
Small government conservatism that demands limited powers and limited roll of government is incompatible with the modern Police State. The idiotcracy that elected Obama, wants surrogate parents in the form of cops solving every problem. I reject that premise.
