Bill Maher Gets Schooled on U.S. Corporate Profits By African Economist

Readers are advised to remove fluids, food, and flammables from proximity of their computers before proceeding. You've been warned.

HBO's Bill Maher on Friday received a much-needed education on U.S. corporate profits from - wait for it! - an African-born international economist (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Bill Maher Gets Schooled on U.S. Corporate Profits By African Economist

After showing a video clip of Fox News’s Sean Hannity and former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain discussing whether or not Barack Obama is intentionally trying to destroy capitalism, Maher said, “This is where the Republican Party is. And, you know what? Corporate profits as a percentage of GDP are higher than ever. How can he be destroying capitalism? They’re eleven percent. This is the highest since World War II.”

Enter clearly the smartest person in the room.

“But there’s two ways to make profit, right?” interjected Dambisa Moyo. “The problem’s that there’s two ways to make profit. Profit equals revenue minus costs."

Talk slowly, Ms. Moyo. There's an idiot sitting next to you.

"You can either reduce costs or raise revenues," she continued. "And in this case, the reason why everybody is up in a tiz correctly is that companies have been cutting costs quite aggressively, amongst them labor costs, and amongst them higher unemployment. And that’s why I think there’s a schism between that kind of discourse between the Republicans.”

Moyo obviously didn’t realize she was speaking to a total nincompoop, for Maher then asked, “But you don’t think Obama is purposely trying to destroy capitalism?”

“No I don’t,” replied Moyo, “but I just think it’s a bit more nuanced than what you see.”

Yah think?

For those unfamiliar with Moyo, she was raised in Zambia, and has a Ph.D. in Economics from St Antony's College, Oxford University, a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, an MBA in Finance, and a B.S. in Chemistry from American University in Washington D.C. Moyo also worked for the World Bank.

As such, Maher was way outclassed - although that doesn't take much.

The ‘New Party’ of the “Progressives” want ‘state controlled capitalism’ as stated by Marcy Kaptur (D-OH).

How did she get invited to his show? My guess is this. Liberals are so used to the idea that non-white means anti-capitalism, anti-white, and anti-Judeo Christianity values. For them it’s even more true if the person is Black. It’s very difficult for them to accept that such racist idea is far from reality.

But to be fair, it wouldn't take much for that.

Bill Maher: Was Scott Walker the Mentally Retarded Banjo Boy in 'Deliverance'?...

Now I gotta say, Maher takes the prise on resemblance of the Deliverance boy. I really do. Actions, looks and all. lol

Too true. The other night Greta Van Susteren insulted a black woman GOP candidate when she said, I have ask, you are a black female, how can you be a republican? She did not do it to make a point, she just blurted it out.

That convinced me that Greta for all her blah, blah, twisted smile veneer, is racist as hell.

Your guess would be exactly correct, paudio.

I'm a conservative of the melanin-enriched variety. I have a small construction related business, and as such, I'm in constant contact with homeowners. Most are conservatives, but I'd say that about a third of them are libs.

What's funny, is that once my customers let their guard down, they'll often get around to chit chatting about current events with me. What's interesting is, that only about one in ten correctly figure me for a conservative. The rest simply look at my dark skin and assume that I'm a lib.

I can't tell you how many people I've surprised when I share my personal perspective on things. Naturally, the conservatives are pleasantly surprised, while the libs are usually shocked and horrified.

I really try not to talk politics with customers, though. It's not always good for business.

How can this guy make the kind of money to be able to buy the Mets and give obama a million bucks? I don’t believe HBO pays him that much. If they do, the government subsidizes them.

Be careful hoisting Ms. Moyo up as some sort of hero of conservative or classical liberal economics.

Her parents are somewhat well known shady characters in Zambia, her father is running a shakedown scam similar to the Al Sharpton/Rainbow Coalition.

Granted, anyone in Zambia is chiseling if they can afford to send their kids abroad to study.

Ms. Moyo must have escaped from her parents plantation I guess.

"A constant stream of “free” money is a perfect way to keep an inefficient or simply bad government in power. As aid flows in, there is nothing more for the government to do — it doesn’t need to raise taxes, and as long as it pays the army, it doesn’t have to take account of its disgruntled citizens. No matter that its citizens are disenfranchised (as with no taxation there can be no representation). All the government really needs to do is to court and cater to its foreign donors to stay in power.

Stuck in an aid world of no incentives, there is no reason for governments to seek other, better, more transparent ways of raising development finance (such as accessing the bond market, despite how hard that might be). The aid system encourages poor-country governments to pick up the phone and ask the donor agencies for next capital infusion. It is no wonder that across Africa, over 70% of the public purse comes from foreign aid.

In Ethiopia, where aid constitutes more than 90% of the government budget, a mere 2% of the country’s population has access to mobile phones. (The African country average is around 30%.) Might it not be preferable for the government to earn money by selling its mobile phone license, thereby generating much-needed development income and also providing its citizens with telephone service that could, in turn, spur economic activity?"

The rest of the article, which is too long to c/p is rather damning to "the cause".

Of course this all could be "a front", but at least some native had the guts to explain how Western aid is a perpetual joke on Africa due to corruption in the IMF, WBA, UN and African governments.

I haven’t read her new book, did read her 2009 book Dead Aid after a review was posted on another online economics forum, don’t get me wrong, she is a brilliant author and I agree with much of what she wrote in Dead Aid.

THe dynamic goes like this, her mother runs a Ex/Im bank for investors from India and the Indian diaspora. Her father runs a human rights/worker rights campaign. When a multinational or non-Indian investment group tries to angle in on a contract that the mother’s bank wants to take, her father is brought in to run interference and rile up the locals against the competing foreigner multinational.

This is standard practice on all sides in Zambia, the Indians, the Chinese, the Westerners, the South Africans and more recently Middle Eastern investor groups all run these “social justice” interference operations by walking money around in the streets of Lusaka, Ndola, Chitwe and the other copperbelt cities.

Now, I’m not saying Ms. Moyo carries around the weight of the sins of her father, I’m saying that she has first hand knowledge of the machinations of cronyism, nepotism, bribery etc that goes on in failed economic nation states.

She should have had the guts to respond, “Ubama is a socialist and so obviously, yes, he wants to destroy - - or at least limit and control for his socialist agenda - - the free market capitalism that made America the greatest, most prosperous nation in history.”

But she didn’t have the guts to respond that way.
Instead, she agreed with the smug, lying, scumbag Maher.

I first saw the problem of foreign aid explained in Isobel Patterson’s book “God of the Machine”.

Just as a 6 volt electrical circuit cannot withstand 120 volt electricity, a 3rd world country’s energy paths are not set up for first world funding.

If the leaders of a 3rd world country just skim off a few percentage points of the foreign aid that comes into the country, they will have more resources than any of their opponents. Power corrupts, and ...
