Meeting held to discuss weekend violence in Hartford

A violent weekend in Hartford ended with two people dead, several more injured and many others looking for answers.

In total, Hartford saw seven shootings and one stabbing over the weekend.

In the wake of all the violence, Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra met with officials at City Hall to talk about the violent weekend.

Segarra and Hartford Police Chief James Rovella usually meet on Wednesdays, but the meeting was moved up to Monday morning because of the weekend violence.

The two met for about 40 minutes Monday morning for an update on what took place.

From the North End to the South End, the violence was widespread.

While detectives investigate the separate incidents, Rovella said they are drawing a connection between at least two of the shootings.

He added that the violence comes on the heels of the Hartford Police Department implementing its summer program, the months in which the city typically sees an uptick in violent crimes.

"What we do, we increase patrols," Rovella said. "We're extra vigilant in investigations and we go from there."

Segarra said he isn't considering asking for state troopers to help out on the streets, but he is looking for some state resources specifically to develop a uniformed, centralized, re-entry initiative with parole, probation and the Department of Corrections.

He said Hartford recently picked up more than 7,000 new releases.

"We need to make sure we have the resources to coordinate the re-entry of these men and women who often find themselves in our city, and probably need a lot more support than they are currently getting," Segarra said.

Better yet, lock up the repeat criminals and leave them behind bars.

Well, as long as they don’t try to use neighborhood watch groups, I can’t see what can go wrong.

We’re dealing with the same problems out here in California. Judges cared more about prison ‘discomfort’ than the safety to the general public. Better to let hardened criminals out on the street than see them have it tough in prison.

IMO, judges like this deserve to have all the released felons live in the quarter mile around their home. Let their spouses and children deal with the down sides.

How I hate politically correct speak...

planning to let convicted criminals out of prison early = “re-entry program”

convicted criminals let out of prison early to roam the streets = “new releases”

What do they expect when the put 7,000 criminals on the street?

Of course the crime is “widespread”.

Well, Hartford...If you try a little harder, you could outdo Chicago. Are you content to just be second place?

I just came across footage on youTube of what appear to be National Guard disrupting a parade held earlier this month. I get that things are bad there, but I’m not sure about when the military can or can not legally be used to assist police?
