The Falkland Islands, the South American islands subject to a bitter territorial dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina, are to have a referendum over their links to the UK.
Here's a full statement from David Cameron, via The Guardian:
"I have always said that it is up to the Falkland Islanders themselves to choose whether they want to be British and that the world should listen to their views. Thirty years ago they made clear that they wanted to stay British.
That's why British forces bravely liberated the island from Argentine invaders. Now the Argentine Government wants to put that choice in doubt again, by shouting down the Islanders' ability to speak for themselves and punishing them for exercising their own free choice.
That's why it's absolutely right that the Islanders have today set out how they intend to make their voices heard once more. And Britain will be resolute in supporting their choice.
Next year's referendum will determine beyond doubt the views of the people of the Falklands. Britain will respect and defend their choice. We look to all UN members to live up to their responsibilities under the UN charter and accept the Islanders' decision about how they want to live."
Consensus on the islands in the past has overwhelmingly been in favor of keeping the link to the UK, with one poll in the 1980s suggesting 94.5% want to remain British (most of the islanders are descended from the UK and immigration is capped).

Hussein’s already gassing up for a trip to the Maldives to show “our” support against mean ol’ England.
What do you suppose the consensus would be if the Falklands had our immigration policy?
Like anybody would actually vote to become part of Argentina...
The Falklanders are sheep farmers. Just give them some sheep farms in North Dakota or somewhere out west. Next, turn the islands into an American protectorate for the next 50 years. Last: take our 2500 inmates on death row and transfer them to the island where the Argentines can staff the new penal colony. They can live out their lives and have their sex with the sheep. After 50 years the islands turn over to Argentina. It’s win, win, win and there is ‘saved face.’ The losers are the Brit citizens who cost their country $500K per freed islander 30 years ago. Britain loses oil rights. The U.S. would be the best arbiter.
Considering the mess the UK has made of itself since the Falklands war the choice may not be as clearcut as it used to be.
Our immigration policies are just fine on paper, it's actual implementation that seriously sucks. But the more correct question would be: What would the consensus be if the immigration policy to the Falklands matched the immigration policy of Britain? I'm not sure if they'd be seeking to join Argentina or Saudi Arabia...
After the sterling success you've made of Afghanistan I can understand why you believe that
The Brits actually built a Military Cemetery and gave the dead a full military funeral.
I do not believe the actions of the Argentine Gov are lost on the few living Argentinians left on the Falklands...
I’m pretty certain DS was being sarcastic.
We need to drill the crap out of that area and see if it has any value.

Ha!
I love some of the posts on this thread.
Thanks for that one.
Our immigration policies are a disaster. Do we really need 1.2 million LEGAL immigrants a year--25% of the adults lack even a high school degree. Over 50% of legal immigrant headed households are on at least 2 major welfare programs.
During the decade ending in 2010, the US brought in 13.9 million LEGAL immigrants, the highest decade in our history. During that same period, there was a loss of jobs (0.4%). We have 23 million Americans looking for fulltime employment. Does this make any sense?
It’s Ironic that the Faulklands can have a referendum on remaining in the UK, but Scottland cannot, and neither can the entire UK on whether it would be beneficial to remain in the EU (SSR)!
It would be the best thing that ever happened to England if they could get rid of the lazy no good Scots (for the record, my father's descendants are from Scotland). Allow the good Scots to continue to serve on Her Majesty's armed forces but get rid of the welfare state.
