Not executing them for robbery has not reduced the death rate of armed robbers one bit.

Except that Michigan eliminated the death penalty in 1846. So executing them there has not been an option for quite a long time.

But we can shoot them at the scene which is a pretty effective deterrent.

My point was that either the government executes them, or the public has to execute them while defending itself. Either way, they get killed.
