Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer upset the North Dakota Republican Party-backed candidate for at-large Representative on Tuesday night. With 84 percent of precincts reporting, Cramer had 53 percent to Brian Kalk’s 46 percent.
Cramer is running for the House seat vacated by freshman Rep. Rick Berg (R), who easily won his Senate primary Tuesday against businessman Duane Sand (R).
Earlier this year, North Dakota Republicans picked Kalk, also a public service commissioner, as their endorsed candidate in the GOP primary. A former state party chairman, Cramer ran outside the party endorsement system, giving the GOP’s chosen candidate a significant challenge for the first time in recent history.
National conservative groups such as the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks boosted Cramer with independent expenditures on his behalf.
This November, Cramer faces the newly minted Democratic nominee, former state Rep. Pam Gulleson. Roll Call rates this seat as Likely Republican.

The state party has shown bad judgement, nominating Brian Kalk and Rick Berg, both of whom have proven to be weak candidates.

They got slapped tonight. There was a fair amount of arrogance in the state party leadership.

About Berg — ND is very much a retail politics state. A weak candidate will kill us there.
You think Berg will lose the Senate election? If so it’s probably impossible for the GOP to take a majority without some major upsets elsewhere like FL or OH.
It was the state party that chose Kalk not the NRCC.
Anyhow, I hate headline writers. It's not an "upset" when you've been leading the polls as Cramer has been.
Kalk was hardly a weak candidate. He has been under constant attack by radical anti energy enviros while Kramer is bought and paid for by those same radicals.
I don’t. So it might be close, but how does Obama’s girlfriend get 50%? I don’t see it. But we have to work hard when we had assumed it would be easy.
BTW, neither FL or OH would be “major upsets”. Both are tossups to lean D at worst.
And 51 would be possible without ND, FL or OH if we get Virginia, which is a tossup at worst.

Based on the polls the DCCC should be upset too, Cramer was the stronger pick.
