Nowhere in their self-congratulatory signs was there any mention of the people harmed by this. They simply don’t matter.

You are exactly right, and that includes a goodly number of elderly who have frozen to death because they were forced outside of their nursing homes or assisted living facility. the general attitude is "See smoking kills" and becomes another of their phony statistics about smoking related deaths.

I have little doubt that within 10 years most privately held apartment buildings will be similarly non-smoking.

It started nearly a decade ago. In many places (I don't have the list at my finger tips) no smoking is permitted in the common areas of the buildings - not by choice of owner, but by government dictact. Same is true with hotels, and the government has dictating the percentage of rooms that may be smoking permitted, which in some cases is zero.

It might be ignorance. But the bigger component is apathy. They really just don’t care if anyone is inconvenienced in any way. They don’t care about the facts, the science, and they aren’t interested in reasoned compromise. To the person making the rules, an ecig user is a cigarette smoker, and therefore is fair game.

Nobody will ever get fired for buying IBM, as they used to say, and nobody will ever get fired for creating draconian regulations against smokers.

As a practical matter, all it takes is one avid anti-smoker to spot an ecig user, and that user is toast. That is really the problem for ecig users. They can hide it 99% of the time, but it is the 1% that costs them.

I recently went to a baseball game. I didn’t want to go to the smoking section to use my ecig, but felt compelled nonetheless. Even though the regulations didn’t mention ecigs, I had no doubt that I would be kicked out (and probably have my equipment stolen) if the wrong person saw me. Who knows, I may have even been arrested. All for an action that couldn’t conceivably have caused any harm or inconvenience to anyone else.

What a stupid rule. They won’t obey and you can’t kick them out once they are in.

You take the government dime, you play by government rules. It applies whether you are on welfare, in the military, or in prison.

If you are a free man, you do not take money from the government. But your job then becomes a continual effort to stay free, by telling the government to leave you alone, voting in a government that won’t oppress you, and rebelling against a government that has become a tyranny.

This is the one and only instance that I support a smoking ban. If you’re in public housing and they ban smoking, the solution is obvious. Move out and pay for your own housing.
