One incongruity in the story of his Kenyan birth in Mombassa seems to never be commented on.

Daddy Obama’s people, the Luo tribe, are based around Lake Victoria, the far west of Kenya.

Most visitors to Kenya, then and now, go to Nairobi, the capital and a place with a pleasant climate.

Mombassa is on the far SE coast, as far as you can get in Kenya from either of the areas the Obamas would be expected to visit. It has a hot, humid climate, especially in August, when Obama was born.

So what would they be doing in Mombassa in August of 1961?

It’s like an extremely pregnant young woman arriving in USA to visit the in-laws in Denver, but for some obscure reason she decides to give birth in Miami.

Although getting from Denver to Miami today is a great deal easier than getting from Lake Victoria or Nairobi to Mombassa was in 1961.

Often a young, extremely pregnant (or not so pregnant) woman doesn't DECIDE to give birth. It just happens, and she can't stop it. The birth happens wherever she happens to be at the moment. Also, medical care is more prevalent in the larger cities.

The Kenya Railway (KR) has had 1st Class (4 berths) and 2nd Class (6 berths) passenger cars for ages.

I rode the train in 1984. The trip was very nice, good service. I was also on the 1914 version of the KR for the filming of “Flame Trees of Thika”. Not quite as nice, but not a bad way to travel.

Obama, Sr. may have been posted to Mombasa on a government job. Kenya was still under British rule then. 1961’s trains were probably very similar (if not the identical cars) to the one we traveled on in the 1980’s.
