S.F. couple kill daughter's alleged pimp, cops say

A San Francisco couple whose teenage daughter was allegedly being pimped by a Southern California man tracked him around the state, failing at one attempt to kill him before shooting him to death near Candlestick Park, authorities said Wednesday.

Attorneys for the couple say that they tried everything to rescue their daughter from Calvin Sneed, a 22-year-old alleged gang member from Compton (Los Angeles County), but that they didn't kill him.

Prosecutors, however, say that when Barry Gilton and his longtime girlfriend, Lupe Mercado, couldn't get their 17-year-old daughter back through legitimate means, they turned to premeditated murder.

Gilton, 38, and Mercado, 37, appeared in court Wednesday on murder and other charges for allegedly shooting Sneed in the Bayview neighborhood in the early hours of June 4.

The couple have been together since middle school and live with their three other children in San Francisco. Their daughter disappeared some time ago and after searching for her, Gilton and Mercado discovered that she was turning tricks and that Sneed was her pimp, their attorneys said.

"They had gone out to local police agencies, agencies in Southern California - they had even tried talking to national organizations," said Eric Safire, Gilton's attorney. "Every place they turned to turned them away." L.A. shooting

Seems like they their daughter and society a big favor. They should not be charged at all. If charged I hope they are found not guilty.

Its less dangerous to arrest the parents than a gang member.

I would not be surprised if the gang told the cops to handle this or there would be trouble.

Vigilantism is exactly what you get when the State fails to uphold its responsibilities as an effective governing authority, ergo, this is the natural and predictable end result of a failed state.

As a father of an 18-yr old daughter, I gotta say, under the same circumstances, I would probably do the same thing.

But if these folks get convicted, the sentence for the murder should be more like community service, not hard time.

Hey, they already demonstrated they are good at community service, by taking this gang member off the streets.

I agree. Even if the girl was willing, she was still under age and law enforcement has a responsibility to help. Evidently in the Bay area if it’s “just sex” the law doesn’t apply to anybody doing anything. Such a liberated world we live in.

My daughter is 14, ther would be blood in the street. At 17 this sounds like kidnapping. The police turn a blind eye - all bets are off.

what I read is she went over to another pimp, then she killed original pimp while he was asleep in a hotel room. It is not to say the guy wasn’t a complete evil reprobate who derserved to die, just how she did it was a little cold.

They tried to get her back by asking cops for help. What were they supposed to do? Let her go? I say give them a medal.

The only question, and I grant that it is an unsettling one, is did they really get her back?

Several elements of this story are unintentionally funny.

Calvin Sneed? Cranston Snord? Lamont Shadowskeedeeboomboom?

Nutty Block Crip street gang? Wasn’t the Nutty Block Crisp one of Willy Wonka’s candies? Or is it more a granola bar?

Gilton, 38, and Mercado, 37...lifelong San Francisco residents who have been *dating* since their teens...and live with their three other children...

=== Gilton, a former high school basketball star, was convicted in 1995 of drug dealing and possession. He and Mercado face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and one count of discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle. Gilton was also charged with possession of a firearm as a felon. ===
