Melting polar caps. Satellite data shows the winter of 2011-2012 had the largest mass of ice in the north pole since satellite measurements began.

All your other points were good and true. This one above is not. Last winter's ice peak was about normal for the satellite era, but now the ice is back to the low end of the range

Extent and mass are different measures. I wish I could find the article I read because it had some good data.

This has some comparisons of ice mass for winter 2010-2011.
