How is this more efficient than just picking up the sandwich, taking it to the clerk and paying for it.

What benefit is there for me to press those buttons?

It’s a system for ordering a sandwich and selecting options (e.g., “What kind of bread do you want . . . you want mayo on that?”). It’s not a question of buying a prepackaged sandwich off the shelf.
