Judge tosses man in slammer for ‘sagging’ pants

LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) – An Ohio man is sent to the slammer for saggy pants.

Lorain Municipal Court Judge Mark Mihok has been on the bench for 10 years. Like an umpire, he has the call of the courtroom. That includes handing down sentences to upholding high standards in court.

On Thursday, Durrell Brooks of Lorain was in court to assist his girlfriend with her traffic citation. That is when Judge Mihok found the 23-year-old man was in violation.

“When he turned around and sit back down, I could see that his pants were sagging. And, I could see his underwear,” Judge Mihok said.

The judge found Brooks in contempt of court and sent him directly to jail for three days. Judge Mihok said he does not impose a dress code because he knows Lorain is a working town.

“But, at least they have to have no underwear showing,” he said.

On Friday, Brooks’ mother came to court to plead her son’s case. Michelle Brooks felt three days in jail for saggy pants was excessive punishment.

“I was surprised, I am was shocked. I was like I didn’t even think that was a law to get them arrested for showing their underwear,” Michelle Brooks said.

Judge Mihok said he has to be respectful of everyone in his courtroom.

“Yesterday I had a courtroom full of people. I had children in here. I have elderly women here and I can’t have people showing their underwear in court,” he told Brooks’ mother.

Durrell Brooks was brought up from jail to discuss the matter. Brooks said he felt his shirt covered his saggy pants and that he wasn’t warned to pull them up.

“Nobody should have to tell you to pull your pants up,” Judge Mihok told Brooks.

Judge Mihok said he did not believe Brooks meant to be disrespectful in court. He reduced his sentence to the one day served and released him from jail.

“I guess I will have to wear my pants like Urkel. I mean put them up to my stomach and hope that he don’t say nothing about that,” Brooks said outside the courthouse.

Be forewarned. Judge Mihok will not tolerate saggy pants. Brooks was the third person this month he has sent to jail for “sagging” in court. ”I have to keep things from turning into a rodeo in court. And, I think this is the only way I can do it,” the judge added.

I wish I knew how to find and post a photo of the judge from “My Cousin Vinny.” (One of the funniest movies ever!)

Judge: “Are you mocking me?” :)

I had to go to court once in Leesville, LA when stationed at Ft Polk.

There were some memorable moments while waiting for my turn but one in particular was a guy that stood before the judge wearing a shirt that said BULLSHIRT on it. Judge told him he had 5 minutes to get home and change or he’d be held in contempt. Said the same thing to a guy wearing shorts.

Glad to hear they have surplus jail space and $ in Lorain for this sort of thing. I knew a guy who worked in a county jail doing booking and he said it costs the county about $100 just to process an inmate. I can believe that with all the deputy time and paperwork that is generated.

of the times that i’ve had to be in court, i’m always appalled at the outfits i see. mini skirts, tiny shorts, extreme plunging necklines on women; and baggy saggy pants, stained clothes, obscene slogans.. or jerseys and warm up pants, pajamas (both genders). if there’s a dozen people in court (excluding lawyers and employees) likely 10 of them are dressed like they either just woke up or they’re heading to a low end bar.

That guy you knew doesn't know what he's talking about. There is no set cost for processing an inmate at a county jail. All of the jail employees are paid a set salary so the costs for processing inmates doesn't change from one day to the next, regardless of how many inmates are processed.

I am appalled by the outfits I see everywhere, so I guess the courtroom is no different. There are so many people who just have no respect. Have you been to a wedding lately?

And, now, we have a president whose wife does not wear stockings and is proud of it.

Have you been to a wedding lately?

Or even just to church. We have a couple young women in our congregation who wear their slacks so low that there is crack visible, even when they're standing. When they go down to the altar to kneel and pray, they leave nothing to the imagination. After one girl's outfit was particularly egregious, Hubby went to our pastor's wife and told her either she needed talk to her about it or he would do it. Hubby is old enough to be this girls's grandfather. I believe God accepts us as we are, but, I also believe we are told to not be a stumbling block to our fellow believers. A couple of the mature women and I have a pact now to help guide the younger women when they're dressed inappropriately.

This was a thread about decorum. You youself commented on the lack of decorum in the courtroom, and said it in a way that indicated you were posting (if I may use your own words) “from a low end bar”.

I was commenting on your lack of decorum on FR, you idiot, (now THAT was a example of a personal attack) not anything about you personally.

No wonder you don’t even understand the proper use of English, you can’t even understand the difference between a comment directed at your actions and a comment directed at your person.

Thus my question whether or not you were a product of pulick screwls.
