The question then becomes: Napoleon? Hitler? The Kaiser? Von Bismark? Europe in general, but France and Germany in specific, are setting themselves up for smackdown/war, as well as anything else. Sooner or later, all the posturing in Europe will start something. Look at most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there. Germany and France may have the money, and thus, for the moment, the power. I don’t see the EU lasting too much longer, though, do you? Too many Greeces combined with countries wanting to be imperial for any stability, long term.

I think the EU will continue... but Germany will be in charge.

Valéry Giscard d’Estaing said four years ago that the EU has to “invent its own George Washington”—but frankly, the analogy is ridiculous. What the EU fanatics are really in search of is a modern-day Charlemagne, and many have said so . . .
