Desperation: Obama Surrogate Calls to Make Voting Mandatory
breitbart.com ^ | 6/21/12 | Ben Shapiro

Peter Orszag, former head of the Obama Office of Management and Budget, is desperate. With even Roll Call recognizing that President Obama is fighting an uphill battle for re-election, Orszag is floating a trial balloon: mandatory voting. His call for forced voting comes in an op/ed for Bloomberg News:

The U.S. prides itself as the beacon of democracy, but it’s very likely no U.S. president has ever been elected by a majority of American adults.

It’s our own fault -- because voter participation rates are running below 60 percent, a candidate would have to win 85 percent or more of the vote to be elected by a majority.

Compulsory voting, as exists in Australia and more than two dozen other countries, would fix that problem. As William Galston of the Brookings Institution argues, “Jury duty is mandatory; why not voting?”

During the 2008 election cycle, voter participation was approximately 64 percent; in 2004, it was about the same. Orszag wants that number up. Why?

Beyond simply raising participation, compulsory voting could alter the role of money in elections. Turn-out-the-vote efforts, often bankrolled by big-money groups, would become largely irrelevant. Negative advertising could be less effective, because a central aim of such ads is to discourage participation in the opponent’s camp.

They get fined. When I was stationed in Australia 30 years ago, it was a ten dollar fine if you didn’t vote.

democrats don’t want everyone to vote because they would lose, they only want their people to vote and they want their people to count them..
I’m sure if the Cubans could have a true free and fair election and everyone had to vote, the commies would be out.

There is no way the democrats want this, it would be the end of everything they stole..

Am beginning to rethink the thought of mandatory voting. If all not voting were to be marking ballots (as are) as uninterested or none of the listed on ballots, then nobody would be elected. This might be a good thing ... the nobody elected part.

Oh, yeah, the guy has women thinking he’s real smart so he “rents it out for breeding purposes only” (or some bizarre idea like that). He’s a regular Stephen Hawking.

You have the right not to vote if you choose to. Liberals again want to take away one more right, all in the guise of something noble. If there is a form of tyranny practiced somewhere in the world, it is ridiculous that there are people who want to copy that over here.

There’s a lengthy interaction among Sparta, Athens and Thebes regarding the utility of democracy ~ and finally the gays won when Macedonia took over Greece.

Mandatory voting? I’m all for it! Citizen taxpayers must vote! Everyone else, sit and watch.

Okay, Mr. Orzag, just for fun, please point to the part of the constitution that allows for mandatory voting.

Haven’t you noticed? The Constitution no longer exists to these people. Not until a Republican is in office, that is.

LOL! I had forgotten about that! Thanks for the reminder!

This is why it is a problem with ‘revenge of the nerds’. They’re totalitarians. EVERY time.

never happen. You’d need positive picture ID at the polls to be sure you got everyone
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
The state of Virginia is now offering (one time $10 fee) an ID card specifically for Veterans.

To get the card, I had to show them a state issued ID, and a 214 but I also showed my VA card (which they don’t require but the clerk ‘appreciated’ it as it was another qualifier).

So, in essence, I showed 3 to pay to get 1 and yet these idiots claim it is to hard to get ID’s.

I am really surprised that the Pols haven’t brought up the (FREE) National ID again but that really would present a quagmire for the Liberals.

I think I will show up at the next Union election and ‘vote’ without a card....hmmmmm

Jury duty is mandatory; why not voting If you are not registered to vote, most likely you are not on jury duty selection radar.

I don't know how they do it where you live, but California uses DMV driver's license lists as well as voter registrations.

Oh goodie, just like North Korea: 99.98% turnout, with 100% voting for Kim Jong-Il.
