BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont prosecutor says an Essex homeowner who stabbed to death an intruder found in his home in the middle of the night acted in self-defense and no charges will be filed.

On Tuesday, Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan released the results of his investigation into the June 1 incident at the home of 40-year-old Shawn Garrett.

He had been stabbed in the heart.

The predator died doing what he loved, and died of a broken heart. How touching.

This is the second time a perp has been dispatched in the Burlington area by a homeowner in the last few weeks .

There was a similar situation in Winooski a week or so ago.

Ryan Morton-Lane

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20120603/NEWS02/120603008/Police-Essex-intruder-had-criminal-record

“...Morton-Lane’s fingerprints were on file in Connecticut because he has a criminal record there. He said it was “a few pages” and included property crimes.

“Confirming the man’s true identity was difficult because he used three street names and was from out-of-state, officials said.

“Chief Brad LaRose... said as police tried to determine the man’s identity, they learned of an aggravated assault and robbery that had not been reported to police.”

In other VT news, a man, 73, suffered an "untimely death" breaking into a house. Apparently, he neglected to avoid enough of the broken glass to avert bleeding to death.

Toxicology (and other reports) pending.
