Four Indian Navy Ships, led by the frigate INS Shivalik, were making their way to the South Korea from the Philippines when they were unexpectedly contacted by a Chinese warship welcoming them to the South China Sea. The Chinese warships then proceeded to escort them along their route. The Indian fleet was on a month-long goodwill tour that included stops at ports in Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and, lastly, Shanghai. The greeting as well as the length of the escort, which lasted half a day, was seen as both an amicable gesture and a troubling assertion by the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of its control of surrounding waters – an area containing several territories disputed between China and its Southeast Asian neighbors. They actually have a fairly large number of frigate and destroyer-class vessels, and have for a long time. They’re not a big navy, but they’ve had blue-water capability for a good 20-30 years now, including a small carrier. The PLAN is the newcomer in the area, and are trying to throw their weight around early to stake out their “turf”.
I have to wonder if the PLAN expects to try this with any US navy ships passing through the area.

Who knew that fatuous and uninformed remarks masquerade as humor on FR as much as they do. The rest of what used to be known as the "free world" is glad that India has a Navy as a counterweight to the PLN.
Do you actually think that the USN would task a single nuclear attack sub to escort a task force from a neutral (at worst) nation on a goodwill visit to a US ally? Unless the Indians requested an escort, which is doubtful, I think the USN has better uses for their assets.
