A Wichita man shot a would-be robber in an early morning home invasion, police say.
Wichita police Sgt. Jim Pinegar said a 64-year-old man walked into a house in the 3000 block of E. First Street, near Hillside, shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. The resident of the home fired two shots at the other man using a .45-caliber gun, Pinegar said. One shot hit his arm.
The man fled to a nearby Kwik Shop, according to a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor. Within minutes, someone at the store called 911 to report a gunshot victim on scene.
The resident of the house — a 60-year-old man — also called police, the dispatcher said. Pinegar said he did not know the invader.
The alleged burglar was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. He sustained serious injuries, the dispatcher said.
More range time for the shooter would be nice.
Remember it’s “center mass”.
Two to the center, then one to the head for good measure.
With a .45 caliber pistol, one to center-of-mass would be sufficient. Article states he had “serious” injuries. You would expect that.
Can’t count on one shot being enough even with a .45. There are documented cases of a .45 headshot failing to take down a person. I carry .45 and I sure as heck don’t count on “one shot, one down” - which is why there’s 13 more behind the first one.

Nothing hand-held is a 100% one-shot-stopper. Not even an M-79.
What was the perp high on?
In the arm?? Better to keep an eye out for the slug to return in 6-8 weeks. Really dumb!!
But I like my odds better with a .45.
I went outside to investigate a funny noise in the back yard. Turned out to be a rabid raccoon - agitated, tremors, gibbering (that was the noise). Darn thing CHARGED me. Surprise!! So I hauled out my little .380 and shot it. I got a solid hit -saw the fur fly and it spun around, fell down, then got up and ran off.
Got off a second shot but not sure if it hit.
At least it did end the threat, but I've revised my plans a bit. .45, no more round ball, and double tap. It's awfully heavy just to have in my back pocket, but . . .
Not stated, no evidence he was on something one way or the other. Non-pharmaceutically boosted individuals have demonstrated similar capability, though admittedly not often.
There was also the case of the (I think it was Chicago) officer that shot someone who was charging him in the head once with a .45ACP 230gr JHP. Not only did the man not perish, he actually continued on several paces before sitting down hard and complaining of a headache. The individual was not on drugs and possessed a high sloping forehead, which the .45 had ricocheted off of.
This is not an indictment of the .45 - it’s an illustration that there is no such thing as a 100% reliable one-shot-stop handheld weapon. There have been non-drugged individuals hit COM with 12ga 3” slugs who did not go down - and that’s a round that makes the .45 look like a spitball in terms of energy.
Don’t rely on any weapon to do the job in just one round. This is reality, not Hollywood.
A 12 gauge shotgun is another possible solution.
Also a valid answer, but still requiring range time. Shotguns are not magic wands (usually) or area-effect weapons. :P
There's a reason that cops are trained to keep firing until the perp falls to the ground or they need to reload.
If you need to shoot, KEEP SHOOTING until all the perps are on the ground and not making hostile moves. (Being on the ground but still trying to raise a gun in your direction counts as a hostile move).
I suspect that the 64 year old perp was not a burglar, but just “stupid drunk”, and went into the wrong house, which happens a lot.
All things considered, winging him was probably the best result for all concerned. Maybe the light will dawn through his alcoholic haze, or at least to his family, that gramps has been imbibing too much.
And the 60 year old shooter won’t have nightmares about offing some otherwise harmless elder whose greatest worry at the time was probably that his old lady was going to give him a good snarling for coming home sotted at 3am.
Of course, if he is a burglar at the age of 64, he’ll prolly be back with his buddies in the big house soon enough.
