Our manufacturing sector produced $1.855 Trillion in 2010 with 12.5 million workers. The number of manufacturing workers keeps decreasing while the output keeps increasing. We are able to produce more with less workers.

Steel is not nearly as important as it used to be.
It has mostly been replaced by other materials like concrete, aluminium, plastics, etc...
We produce aircraft, gas turbines, locomotives, tractors, machine tools, cars, petroleum, natural gas, weapons, etc...
The problem is that the USA has the “feel” of the 1930’s Weimar Republic or the collapsing Roman Republic.
