Which begs the question: WHEN do we first believe? It is one thing to answer an altar call; another to experience a conversion of our lives that amounts to a rebirth. In any case. with regard to the doctrine of purgatory, both Catholics and Protestants suffer from the evitable distortions that result from warfare. The Church was divided into partisan camps, and words became shibboleths. Purgatory is one of them.
