State trooper pumped $7K of gas on the state's dime; theft of fuel for personal use points to a lack of oversight

For more than three years, a veteran State Police trooper stole thousands of dollars worth of gasoline from state fuel pumps for his personal vehicles without being detected — and when authorities did catch on, he was not charged criminally and was allowed to retire with pension.

Disciplinary records obtained by The Star-Ledger show Staff Sgt. Steven M. Jones admitted in April that he stole 3,128 gallons of gas valued at $7,038 from October 2007 to March 2011. The 25-year trooper then retired under a negotiated plea agreement with internal affairs.

“Sometimes I do things I don’t normally do,” Jones said. He did not return a phone call seeking further comment.

Well, I’m satisfied. Sometimes I do things I normally don’t do as well. All is forgiven...

And gets to retire after only 25 years to boot.

I’m getting past the point of frustrated. I believe nothing the police say anymore.

It would cost $100,000 to prosecute him, and the states are all bankrupt. So he walks.

“During the board’s hearing, Jones, 47, said he was a recovering alcoholic but did not always follow his treatment routine during the time he stole the gas. He also said he worked a large amount of overtime but could not overcome his debt, which led to his actions. “

A backsliding alcoholic with a badge and a gun, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Truly the feel good story of the day.

It’s good to be a King’s Man if you can’t be the King himself.

Bought him out so that he wouldn’t scandal the department all to hell.

Not when he could have named dozens of supervisors who were doing the same thing.

Anyone else wondering how many people he charged with DWI when he was in fact drunk himself?

If they are not at least getting restitution, something is wrong. Make him pay 14K over the next five years, deduct from the retirement payments 220 per month would be restitution. Make him pay 28K over the next 5 years starts to sound like punishment, which is the appropriate reponse.

It’s like the girls who stole money from a girl scout cookie sale. They said, they should not be prosecuted if they give the money back.

A year after retiring for the first time, the small southern town where my parents moved appointed my father as town manager.

In attempting to straighten out the mess of finances, he required receipts every time a city vehicle filled up at the city pump.

This caused such an uproar from the city-worker bubbas who filled their bass boats and campers up on Friday afternoon at the city pump that the Mayor overruled him, to which my dad told him to manage the money himself and finally retired for good.

I’m with you. If a pig (a little OWS lingo there) has problems with the bottle, let him process parking tickets or something - but PLEASE don’t put him on the streets with a gun. There are enough bad pigs already.
