There are two issues here. The article concentrates on C-130s which the Air Force only has eight configured for air tanker kits. The bigger issue is the Forest Service cut some air tanker contracts over safety concerns regarding the aging aircraft being flown.

No matter what the cause there are less tankers than previous years and we have big problems in Colorado.

By the way, I had to call Verizon the other day about a wireless issue and got a recorded message saying there was a problem with the network due to Colorado fires. I’m on the East Coast at the time. Makes you wonder about the fragility of it all.

There was an artclein the Springs Gazete about fire suppression cutbacks...it did seem like a mess the first two days with the MAFFS sitting on the tarmac 12 miles from the place where 200 homes burned down.

At last count 248 homes lost to the High Park fire. Colorado Springs briefing just listed the number of homes lost Tuesday to the Waldo Canyon fire as "in the hundreds." Supposed to have a more precise count later today.

Thanks hussein and Forest Service, thanks for nothing. Not taking away from the men and women on the ground. Just wish they had the organization support and equipment to be more effective. The blame for that (lack of support) falls much farther up the chain.

The real way to fight fires is with animals, chainsaws, and controlled burns. You have to control the fuel levels. No amount of air support will ultimately keep a wooden home safe in a forest.

You didn't get much out of George Bush either.
