Colorado city looks to Obama for aid as fire turns deadly
CNN ^ | June 29, 2012 | By Moni Basu and Chelsea J. Carter

Friday brought sad news to Colorado Springs: A monster wildfire that raged nearby and came roaring down a mountain has turned deadly. Authorities discovered a charred body in a house consumed by flames. One other person was missing.

But Friday also brought some relief. The fire, raging since last weekend, had been growing steadily, fueled by hot, arid conditions and winds that gusted at 65 miles per hour.

There was relief, too, in knowing that President Barack Obama was on his way to Colorado to visit fire-affected areas. He was scheduled to arrive around noon, local time.

Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach, who has been present at media briefings, skipped talking to reporters Friday morning.

He attended an emotional meeting the evening before with residents wanting to know what had happened to their homes. And in the morning, he was gearing up for his meeting with the president, sorting out in his head what kind of federal aid he would ask for.

Correction CNN: Obama interjected himself by coming to the fire for a political photo op.

Maybe he can tax the fire out. Or make the citizens pay a penalty for not putting the fire out themselves.

He didn’t bother to show up in Texas last summer when three million acres burned and over 1700 homes were burned to the ground, but then Texas is not a swing state. What a horrible president he is.

Obama shares responsibility in this disaster by cutting funding to the aerial tankers.

Too many white people in Colorado to worry about it.

I have a cousin living there on the East side of I-25, a little East & North of the AF Academy. I hope the fires don’t spread to the Academy, then further East...

“Katrina.”

The “media” will never allow that comparison to surface. There will be extensive coverage of his visit, and he’ll be hailed as a conquering hero. They (the “media) have been thirsting to give him dramatic, heroic photo ops and they now have their opportunity. This will become all about him.

I doubt Colorado Springs is looking for much of anything from Obozo.

A fact to be conveniently ignored by the MSM.

We could see the smoke plume from the San Luis Valley this morning. It is over 100 miles away. Conditions are ripe for wildfires. Extreme drought, beetle killed pines, high winds and hot, hot temperatures.

Highly unlikely the flame will cross the interstate to get to the east side of the city.

I would think so, but will pray for the best in any case. The academy is pretty darned close, however.

You are correct. Living in Colorado Springs, I've been on the 24/7 kktv website all of every day. The day this was announced, at one of the twice daily press briefings, all the pols (especially mayor) were asked about it. Bach said, "we called the Secret Service and told them we were too busy to guarantee security. President Obama is coming anyway."

In other words, factoring in his and others tone, they were saying, "DO NOT COME. You're not needed and you're not wanted."

I saw an odd story on the local CBS news the day after the fire flared up, putting Co. Spgs in danger.
The reporterette said that Jay Carney had been asked at that morning’s press briefing, why 0 hadn’t even spoken yet with Gov. Hickenlooper. She reported that Carney proceeded to ramble on for 5 minutes about FEMA and its responsibilities (among other things) without answering the question. When asked again, he said only that 0 was getting all of the latest information. The reporter kept her face blank during the story.
It wasn’t until that night that we heard that he was coming on Friday.
Sounds like he was told to show some interest.

CNN Logic..

"...There was relief, too, in knowing that President Barack Obama was on his way to Colorado to visit fire-affected areas. He was scheduled to arrive around noon, local time..."

If my house was in the path of the fire, a presidential visit for a photo-op and disruption of the actual firefighting would be the last thing I wanted.

I’m on the south side near Carson. Luckily, they kept the fire from jumping 24.

My view is that the people here are neighbors, and as such we look out for each other. Screw 0bozo, stay put in the white hut or go to CA for 4 more fund-raisers. We’re still fighting the fire out here - so stay out of the way.

Colorado is more of a purple state - but I have a feeling that we may swing red this election.
