Don’t know your age, but, back in my day, there was no such job as a school bus monitor. But things were different back in the day, in lots of ways................

Back in the day there were parents - one man, one woman.
If the driver and/or school contacted said parents, the student wouldn't be able to sit on the bus because his butt would be sore for a week.
BTW, back in the day there was no security in schools (or the malls), no metal detectors, no video monitors.
We had dress codes, behavior rules & regs, detention for minor violations, and corporal punishment was permitted.
We also had high graduation rates. Liberalism has destroyed all of that.

I have a friend who used to be a school bus driver. He used to mention “my monitor” frequently. It was my understanding that monitors were introduced not to monitor the kids, but to monitor the drivers. It was a female monitor whenever there was a male driver with young kids.

My age is 45. When I was in school in the 70s, there were no bus monitors, no teacher-assistants, no police officers in the school, no grief counselors, no searches for dangerous nail clippers or aspirin ... and yet we survived *and* learned to read and do math.
