From another story, the bear was within 30 feet of the childen and refused to be driven off. The homeowner shot the 175 lb animal with a .22, killing it. It had two ear tags from previous problems.

Killed with a .22? That’s some pretty good shot placement there.

We had a bear (about a year and a half old) walk through our back yard a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, we were all inside.

but but but .22s are so weak it takes 10 rounds to just maim a squirrel!!!

(Proof that success isn’t just in the the tool(s) used, it’s knowing how to use it)

I had one on my front porch in April. He stepped in my newly mulched walkway. My neighbor called to tell us other wise any of us would have walked right out and came face to face. He heard us out the window and tried to climb a tree but just decided to run away from our big mouths that scared him.

We had three come up my driveway and through the side yard two weeks ago. It was a mama(300#)and two yearlings(125# each).

A guy driving by in his car watched them walk across the road in front of him and right up my driveway. He started beaping his horn because my 9 year old beagle bitch Honey was about 25 feet away from the mama and barking at her.
Honey did not like those bears in HER yard.

These three bears have been seen several times over the last month in my area of southern NH. They have become comfortable around houses. They know that people put out food to feed the birds, squirrels, turkeys, etc.

.22 LR? .223? 22-250? 220 Swift? Maybe .22 Remington Jet? Lot's of other 22 caliber cartridges out there besides rim-fire.

Regardless, if rim-fire's all you have, It's better than a frying pan.

Maybe the report of a .22 is to cover legalities — could it be everything larger than .22 is banned in NY !

*** Bear steaks, anyone? ***

I actually had that once at some Hunting Club Dinner when I was about 18 - 'Black Bear Steak'. As I recall it was a tad 'gamey' and the meat was 'stringy'. And when you're used to only beef it would take some getting used to.

And it does not taste like chicken. ;-)
