The Dean of Students at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey died suddenly on Sunday after he was in a jet ski crash. Capt. Alan "Dex" Poindexter was 51. The accident happened when the astronaut's 26-year-old son, Zachary, collided into the back of a jet ski that Poindexter was riding off the coast of Florida.

"They were both moving and for some reason Capt. Poindexter stopped his watercraft and Zachary for some reason didn't see him stop," said Stan Kirkland, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "Zachary's watercraft went up and struck Capt. Poindexter." Another son, 22-year-old Samuel, was on Poindexter's scooter. They were thrown into the water. A boat picked up Poindexter and took him to shore. He was talking and complaining about rib injuries but he lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The accident happened in a bay between Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach in Florida's Panhandle where Poindexter had been vacationing.

Poindexter was a former NASA astronaut who commanded space shuttle Discovery's second-to-last mission. He retired from NASA in December 2010, six months before the shuttle program ended, and took a job as Dean of Students at Monterey's Naval Postgraduate School.

Amazing. You can survive a launch into a 17,000 MPH escape velocity, but you can't survive getting rear-ended by a jet ski.

I guess there will be a push to outlaw them jet ski's.

Jetskis are hard to see. I think each one should be required to fly two pennants or lights, one red for port and a green one for starboard. They should be mounted on long foxtail type antennas for easy visibility. Sincere condolences to the family.

Not a chance.

But I bet you'll see crush structures, airbags and helmets mandated.
