California Senate passes "anti-Arizona" immigration bill

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - The California Senate on Thursday passed a bill supporters dub the "anti-Arizona" law, which seeks to shield illegal immigrants from status checks by local police and challenges Republican-backed immigration crackdowns in other U.S. states.

The Democrat-led state Senate voted 21 to 13 for the California Trust Act, which blocks local police from referring a detainee to immigration officials for deportation unless that person has been convicted of a violent or serious felony.

The bill has the backing of about 100 immigrant rights groups, police chiefs and mayors.

It has already passed the state Assembly in a 47-26 vote. It will go back to the Assembly for a concurrence vote following the summer recess before heading to Governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat.

The measure seeks to create a national model to counter what backers say is racial profiling inherent in the part of Arizona's anti-immigrant law allowed to stand by the U.S. Supreme Court last week.

It also seeks to push back against a federal program called Secure Communities, which shares the same principles as Arizona's law, supporters say.

"Today's vote signals to the nation that California cannot afford to be another Arizona," Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a Democrat who sponsored the measure, said in a statement.

"The bill also limits unjust and onerous detentions for deportation in local jails of community members who do not pose a threat to public safety," he added.

In passing the law, California stands apart from not only Arizona, but also Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah, which have all adopted strict laws in the past two years to try to discourage illegal immigrants from settling in their states.

On June 25, the top U.S. court upheld the most controversial aspect of Arizona's immigration statute..

One of the major causes of why America has lurched so far left is that states like California, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts and New York made “communism” chic and acceptable instead of repulsive and unacceptable.

Communist propaganda, aided and protected by so-called “free speech” liberals, has been infused into the American educational and so-called intellectual systems and minds since the 1930’s. This is especially true in Hollywood.

Also, the media has turned from being professional and inquisitive to being downright corrupt and incompetent, as well as becoming a part of the Democratic Party (you really can bribe the news media if you know how to do it).

Look at the crap on TV, in the movies, in some music, in the newspapers and in the school books and you’ll know what I mean. Anti-American, all the time, whenever possible.

If it weren’t for groups like Accuracy in Media, Accuracy in Academica, a few conservative academic organizations, Andrew Breitbart/Newsbusters, Glenn Beck (Fox TV show) and the Media Research Center, you wouldn’t have the documentation available to see what has happened to the media since the early 1960’s.

I say this as a former card-carrying journalist (pro-America, Vietnam and Cambodia), Congress, the streets, etc.

The journalists of today have about as much training in ethics, good judgment, balance and patriotism as Charles Manson had in table manners.

But....but....but.....I thought that SCOTUS & the 0dumb0 administration were adamant that only the Fed gubmint should set & establish immigration law & enforcement with federal agencies. But I guess that only applies for conservative, patriotic, pro-American legislation passed by the states.

As long as liberal, retard states pass their own pro-illegal measures, I doubt any appeals court of fed judge will rule against this travesty.

I feel sorry for conservatives & freepers who are living in la-la Kalifornicate Socialist Republic. Otherwise it is time to hand Kalifornicate back to Mexico and never let them return to the U.S.

Fellow Americans. Not all of us Californians, the 52% of us that actually sre legal, work for a living and are getting raped over and over again by Jerry Brown, his fellow demwits and all the illegals, are against Arizona. I would, if I could, move from this shit hole state. I am currently looking into getting a job in South Dakota but I am afraid to do that because if Obama gets re-elected, he will shut down everything related to petroleum products. If Romney gets elected and hopefully does some of his campaign promises, then I will definitely relocate my family even though it will be hard but well worth it. Please don't hold all Californians the same way as the worthless pieces of crap in this state.

Will illegals in California be able to get California Driver’s Licenses that they can show to cops in other states to thwart the laws of more rational states (such as Arizona)?

Dems love illegal aliens..why..simple..because they need the votes, anyway they can get them..and they can get illegals to vote for them. If illegal aliens voted Republican you would hear from Dems that they want them deported, but since illegals love Dems and love Commies they make idiotic bills such as this. I have lived in this state my entire life and if it wasn’t for the fact that the majority of my family lives here I would have left this commie hellhole a long time ago

California is already on the brink of bankruptcy, this just ensured it gets there quicker and faster by basically inviting every illegal to come abuse the state and get away with it.

With this latest outrage against its citizens, my wife has finally agreed that we need to leave this politically crappy state. She is interested in going to Arizona or Texas. I’m ecstatic!!

I don't want a single penny of Federal Tax money to be spent on California when it bankrupts. I don't care about any circumstances or anything else.

If the fedgov picks up the what? $41 billion that Cali is in the hole, then the feds are paying for all of these insane acts that are passing in the legislature out there.

Let em rot and find a way to pay for these insane lefty nut programs by themselves.

We need to file a class action lawsuit against every state with a sanctuary city and that offers drivers licenses to illegal aliens. They're using them to vote and that's diluting our votes, making them less valuable.

Doesn't the Constitution specifically state that only citizens can vote? (yeah, I know)

AZ should do the green thing and cut the power grid feeding
the Commie left coast. That would be about the only Green action I would support.

“Wrong target. It’s not California. It’s the wackadoo infestation that’s gone viral in that state. They’re in the majority now, and will continue to enact contra-survival legislation until the place implodes in anarchy and violence.”

I’ve been beating that same drum for years now. If they ever walked around places like LA, San Diego, San Francisco, or Sacramento, they’d find that “native” Californians are as rare as hen’s teeth.

Telling most people on Free Republic that those California fruits and nuts they disparage are the kids they grew up with next door, or their long departed relative that no one speaks to anymore is a waste of time. They don’t want to hear it no matter how true it is. Of the 20 or so neighbors I have only about 6 have California ties of 1 generation or more. Hard for middle American to look at California and say “We have met the enemy and he is us......”
Honestly I don’t have a solution other than yours Ronnie. Wait until it crashes and pick up the pieces......it’s beginning to look like that will happen much sooner than later. A truely wild ride for those that take it.

“Arizona should just build a wall . . . . between itself and California.”

“They did, they called it Nevada...”

Best look at the map again. Arizona cojoins California along nearly its entire western border, as does Nevada only farther to the north.

“Half of the Mexican population is in Californee-i-a.”

Don’t go braggin too soon, Texas isn’t that far behind, and its beginning to look like the Dems are making political headway, after fleeing their liberal states. It’s a good thing for you that Texas has a part time legislature and a weak governor’s office.

“... and why not pray tell ... why not?”

.....because they’ll throw you in jail as fast as they can, while bleeding your family dry in ransom.....Mexico actually tries to control it’s borders from illegal immigration.....doing what you sugget will only set you up as a “mark” for corrupt police/politicians.

But you go ahead and try. I’ll stay here......

Re: “Half the Mexican population is in California”

The other half is in Texas.

If Obama gets reelected, Amnesty will become law, and Texas will vote Democrat in 2016.

Adios, American Conservatism.
