Vanity Fair magazine has published an excerpt from Washington Post reporter David Maraniss’ upcoming biography of the president entitled “Barack Obama: The Story.”

-snip

In December 1983 Obama met Genevieve Cook, the daughter of a prominent Australian diplomat, at a party. .....Obama and Cook lived together briefly but in May 1985 they broke up.

Obama's white girl friend mentioned in his book “Dreams of My Father” is "based on" Ms. Cook.

What struck me as interesting is that he had not 1 but 2 verifiable girl friends. And that he actually lived with one of them for a short time.

His past is conjured, but there are a few elements tied to the real world in it.

Many gay men go their entire lives without coming out of the closet.

Many are married with children.

Obama would not be exceptional in this respect.

I find the last two paragraphs the most interesting part of the Vanity Fair article:

“Kellman challenged Obama, throwing questions in his path as obstacles, one after another. Why did he want this line of work, with its low pay, long hours, and endless frustration? How did he feel about living and working in the black community for the first time in his life? “I asked him, ‘Why do you want to do this? Why do you want to organize? You graduated from Columbia. You are an African-American when corporations are looking for people like you. Why don’t you do something else?’ But first, Why? Where does this come from? What place and how deep does it come from? And what I got from him was that the people in the civil-rights movement were his heroes. And I also got from him that his mom was a social activist, an academic social activist, but a social activist.”

“As the coffee-shop conversation progressed, Obama turned the tables and started interviewing Kellman. He wanted to make sure that the Developing Communities Project was legitimate and serious. This wasn’t some far-left enterprise, was it? He had moved beyond that, he said. Obama turned his questioning to Chicago and what this disheveled white man could teach him. Kellman wondered what Obama knew about Chicago. Not much. Hog butcher for the world, Obama said, reciting the famous Carl Sandburg line. Not anymore—the stockyards had closed, Kellman responded. Obama mentioned the Cubs, perennial losers, and Harold Washington, the town’s new winner. He pressed Kellman for more observations about the city and the South Side neighborhoods, what was happening with the steel mills, the decline of factory work, the fraying of families and communities. The more they talked, the more it became obvious to Kellman that Obama was his man.

Looks like Tom Cruse. And looks more masculine than Tom Cruse.

What I get from that last paragraph is that if someone interviews Obama, and tries to find out about him ... Obama turns the tables, interviews the interviwer and just asks question after question to divert the conservation away from himself.

Apparently, he's been doing this for decades. The result is that no one knows much at all about Obama, but they sure think he's smart ("Hey! he was interested in talking about me! The guy's obviously brilliant!")

the more it became obvious to Kellman that Obama was his man

Is that not a statement?

masculine? Yep

No makeup. Forgivable in a country girl, but not in college.

I know a lot of attractive women who wear little or no makeup and can work outdoors and/or shoot a rifle well.

Obama must have made the right decision, he became a millionaire and President.

No one knows how he did it, but he did it.
As for his girlfriend, the boy was in bad company.

He also shows considerable caution in planning his life course. He does not say the job must be great because they’re willing to hire him like so many young guys would, but checks into whether it will position him properly in his career.

Of course, one doesn’t rise to the presidency just by running through life randomly.

Thinking back on myself and my friends, none of us wore much makeup in college. Many college women don’t on a day-to- day basis, and if they do, it’s just the basics. Those that do stand out and look ridiculous. Obama’s ex not wearing any doesn’t mean anything, in my opinion.

Not sure what the removed comment was about. Seems like there was another pic hot linked, could be that someone made a copyright complaint.
