The addition of around 80,000 new jobs in the latest monthly report is another lackluster number that’s on the same mediocre economic trajectory as the last few months – or, really, the last decade or so. Analysts on the right will use it to criticize President Obama, and analysts on the left will say it’s on the right path while criticizing Republicans for the Bush years and a lack of leadership in Congress. But maybe it all means something more about America.

From this trip, and from looking at things over the last six months, I am beginning to get the feeling that voters are shrugging their shoulders about politicians, no longer believing they can fix the economic problems. They’ve reset their expectations about how political leaders can change the dynamic. After watching basically no growth in real wages over the last decade, no real growth in private sector jobs and a stagnant unemployment rate, they don’t think that a president (or a governor, for that matter) can do much to change the situation.

i was 16 years old in 1980 and remember it as though it were yesterday...the news interviewed a bunch of dopes- these people were resigned to the fact interest rates would forever be around 16% and unemployment in double digits...i can still hear my father furiously screaming at the television, “people are accepting these interest rates???!!! people are accepting the unemployment???!!”....

Unfortunately, many of those sensible Americans who voted for Reagan 30 yeara ago are now dead.
We have a demographics and stupidity problem now among the voting populace.
The difference is, this time there is no Reagan on the ballot. But we evil, principled conservatives will be blamed for a loss, not the GOP-e who worked so hard to make sure most of us had no real choice in the primary.

I share your frustration but I put the blame on us. It is the conservatives who failed to produce a viable conservative candidate. We make it easy for the GOP-e to nominate their chosen candidates by bickering among ourselves instead of coalescing behind a conservative candidate right from the get-go.
The nomination of Ronald Reagan in the 1980 campaign was a beautiful thing. From the moment Reagan announced his candidacy in November of 1979, he had the full and unwavering support of the conservative wing. The GOP-e at that time clearly preferred George H.W. Bush or Howard Baker but we steamrolled them good.
The current crop of congresscritters care more about their kickbacks than fixing anything.
Failure is the "new normal" for democraps.
I guess it also reminds me of how liberals ran NY City into the ground and democraps called the city "ungovernable", that is until Guiliani became mayor.

And it worked, in a way, for Mr. Carter. Folks came to accept it wasn't his fault, that maybe it was an impossible job.
But that freed them to say, “Well, heck, might as well vote for Reagan. He probably can't do any better, but we already know Carter can't get it done.”
This dynamic, should it take hold, will spell the end of the occupancy of the White House by the Kenyan anti-Christ.

True.. but this is a much different, far less aware and more dumbed-down and self-interested electorate. In 1980, people looked to fix America, because they knew their lot would improve by doing so. Now, with the planned downgrades in expectations and beliefs about this country`s greatness, voters are far more in tune only with what`s in it for them in the short term. 49.5% don`t pay income taxes, and record numbers are on government aid and food stamps. Most of them seem fairly satisfied with that situation, so long as their government check keeps arriving in the mail.
Add to all that a very effective propaganda network disguising itself as “news,” reminding these mindless sheep their benefits they deserve are going to stolen away by the evil Republicans.
I wasn’t around for that election...but from things I’ve heard from people discussing it over the years, these are the same kinds of things that were being said in 1980 with regard to Carter - things weren’t really his fault, the presidency has just become to big for just one man, etc. Sounds nearly identical to what is being said now to try to excuse Obama.
