What set me off? Trying to find just ONE umbrella that wasn't made in China. It wasn't easy...of course; I was in commie territory at the time (Vermont), which didn't help. Finally found one 'Made in Malaysia'...
Sweet.

ON the positive side....
Found out recently that New Balance athletic shoes are made in USA
I'm glad to hear that is still true. I've always favored NB shoes, but as I get older, the shoes seem to last a much longer time. I'm due for retreading soon.
Let’s not get too carried away with this “Buy American” BS. In many cases it is union propaganda to get consumers to buy products made here by union labor to support their lifestyle. They do not want you to purchase cheaper, foreign made goods because it hurts their cause. In many cases, the American product is more expensive than the one made in China for this very reason.
We live in a consumer based free market (in theory). My job as a consumer is to get the best product for the best price, period. Thinking like this is what allows failed and anti-competitive business models to survive and it allows unions to justify their negotiation practices. This is how the “too big to fail” thinking takes hold. “We just can’t lose all of those American (union) jobs to foreign competition!” Use patriotism to get people to buy the overpriced product due to union labor costs.
By the way, what exactly is an American company? Is it where it is based? Where the profits end up? How do we decide? What about all of those auto companies who employ THOUSANDS of non-union auto workers? What about Honda, Nissan, BMW, Hyundai, etc? They employ thousands in the U.S. Should we no longer support them because they do not use union labor? What about all of those jobs? I just read recently that Airbus is opening a huge plant here in the U.S. More jobs for us, but they are not an “American” company. Do we not support them if they offer the best product for the price?
We have allowed unions and other factors to make it too expensive to manufacture many products in the U.S. I do not blame companies for moving. Many here believe a company should be loyal to the U.S. and its workers. Meanwhile, those same workers continue to elect Democrats and vote for politicians who continue to strangle them with regulations, unions, and the highest corporate tax rates in the world.
Like GM?
No. Honda
Whatever you say unions are doing does not absolve China and how china has been dumping products into the U.S.A to destroy the U.S. You say you are for free enterprise and free markets, but you are not because you are for allowing China to merge their economy with the U.S.A’s. You and Obama are allowing China to dictate industrial policy to us, what we manufacture etc.(which is nothing soon). I am for the separation of the U.S. and china you seem to be for the merging of the two, with a communist country. Funny that the U.S. was much better off for all the 50 years of the cold war when the U.S. had a trade embargo on china. why are you for the merging of china and the U.S.? you are a globalist. are you for any border or any laws at all , customs, border control? We have a nation and a constitution and borders. We have to protect them . We can’t allow china nor any nation to send a billion immigrants into the U.S. or a million pounds of cocaine, or a thousand tons of chemical weapons if they just say it is free trade ( yes sending workers can also be called free trade so are you for allowing China to send a 100 million workers into the U.S. since you are for allowing china so much freedom? that’s what you are saying you want to give china freedom and you justify it by calling it freedom. Well we can’t give monsters that are 2 billion strong freedom to destabilize and destroy America be it by allowing it to send armies, or millions of workers, nor any of the things I mentioned so neither can we allow china to DUMP TRILLIONS OF PRODUCTS THAT ARE DESTROYING U.S. ABILITY TO MANUFACTURE AND ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY AND PRODUCE JOBS. But you are for that . China is a communist nation. China has an industrial policy and has imposed that on the U.S. as clinton and Obama have allowed China to increasingly merge their economy with the U.S. The socialists use “free trade” to destroy the U.S.
AND you say free trade has killed unions. Well the unions like the teamsters, teachers unions, SEIU, nurses, and government workers unions are stronger than ever. Yes I am against unions but there is no reason to trade with nations such as communist China.
Put up the trade embargo against China. We had this for 50 years of the cold war and during this time the U.S. was on top of the world. Lifted embargo and the U.S. decline began.
The SIEU and teachers unions and government workers unions thank you for downplaying the growing power and influence these unions have in electing socialsts/communists and driving the socialist agenda.

You must have slept through the last 3 decades.
Unions are on a respirator.
Have been since Reagan torched PATCO.
They’re getting clobbered on the state level all over the US, even in traditional liberal strongholds like California, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
In Indiana where I live, the first action of Gov Mitch Daniels in 2005 was de-certifying the UAW as the representative of the state employees.
