Rep. Carlos T. Henriquez of Dorchester was arrested early this morning on charges of domestic kidnapping and assault stemming from an incident involving a girlfriend who fled from his car, Boston police said.

Henriquez, 35, a Democratic state legislator, was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. after the woman jumped out of his rented Zipcar on Forsyth Way and reached out to a Northeastern University security officer for help, police spokesman Officer James Kenneally said.

Seriously? A Zipcar? One of the most expensive methods of using a car - how does this legislator get around the rest of the time? Does he not have a personal car? Or is it just that he's abusing his office and accepting a freebie from the company, or is his campaign picking up the tab for the Zipcar in another form of embezzlement?

I don't know if the car was the only thing that was charging by the hour in this case, but what I do know is that the stupidity has got to stop at some point. Domestic abuse & battery? Domestic kidnapping? You can't successfully make laws based upon the exception. It's either kidnapping or not, putting some modifier on there and then creating a separate level of punishment serves no purpose in the justice system, and continues to harm it.

Unexpectedly...

The word “Democratic” used within the first two paragraphs. Wow.

(I admit I don’t know which way the BH leans.)

Yeah, but not in the headline.

Note the typical use of ‘rep.’ to connote “Republican”, since they know most people don’t read the story, just the headline.

Though it has its share of libs, the newspaper is generally regarded as right of center.

He should have drove it off a bridge for a step up into Massachusetts US Senate politics.

If he wanted to be a US Senator, he should have driven the car off a bridge...

Maybe that is why she jumped out!

I wonder how the electric zip car would have done with the bath. As a community organizer, I bet he keeps his fine job, I’m sure he was just organizing after all.

What the hell is a Zipcar?

You pay $60, then you can reserve a car online, and use your card to open the car. You rent by the hour - insurance, gas is included, as well as 180 miles, all for a glorious $9 an hour, or $90 a day. It's a great idea for some people, mostly college students. Zipcar.com
