why are so many Jews socially liberal? It doesn’t make any sense.


I don’t really know for sure. I had a girl-friend sometime back that sort of explained it to me. It has to do with being socially acceptable. Not only to family, other Jews but also at work.

They ‘must’ fit in wherever they are at. It’s a sort of camouflage that makes them feel if not invisible then at least a part of the background. And that in turn makes them feel ‘safe’.

That would imply that once critical mass is achieved, where being conservative is the norm in some Jewish community and being socialist makes you an object of scorn and ostracism, that things would tip over rapidly.

I'm not so sure. The love affair with socialism has been going on a long time, and I think there's something there more fundamental than just "wanting to belong". It begs the question of how socialism became the accepted norm in the first place.
