A Brandon man is in jail after a failed robbery attempt, and he has his mother to thank.
Twenty-two-year-old Roy Mitchell's mother stopped him during the middle of his crime by taking away the weapon he had aimed at the clerk. It was all caught on video. It was around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when Mitchell entered D's 1 Stop convenience store on Highway 80 in Brandon.
On the video, Mitchell can be seen quickly grabbing some nacho cheese Doritos and throwing them on the counter.
He then handed the clerk $2 to pay for his snack, but then things changed dramatically.
As the clerk went to get change from the cash register, Mitchell pulled a gun out of his waistband.
He then pointed the gun directly at the clerk and demanded all the money in the drawer.
Then, Mitchell's mother walks up, grabs the gun and orders him out of the store. Mitchell obeyed and left the store with the bag of chips and no cash. Police say Mitchell's mother tried to explain to the clerk the gun wasn't real and begged the clerk not to call the law.
Mitchell and his mother left the scene in a red Oldsmobile. The clerk called the police.
A short time later the vehicle was stopped by Pelahatchie police. Officers found a plastic gun in the vehicle that was made to look like the real thing. Mitchell is facing attempted armed robbery charges.

Stupid criminal tricks. She should have whopped him up side the head with that toy and walked him by the ear to the back to where the cleaning supplies are and made him clean the store inside and out all the while repeating, “I’m stupid, I’m stupid, I’m stupid.”

"Help" to do what, exactly?
When I was very young I used to think the same thing. I was brought up to value the "Golden Rule" and thought that everyone who didn't was obviously mentally impaired and deserved "help" to correct their behavior.
After a lifetime of observation, I have come to believe that there are simply people who don't care about others and who would take any advantage available to benefit themselves at the expense of others. It is called "evil". Evil is a real thing and there is no effective way to convince evil people to be other than evil.
Evil people have made a decision that their lives are important and that the lives of other people are unimportant. They have no respect for other people's property and welfare and care only to spare themselves the pain of the consequences of crime.
What complicates the situation is that there are degrees of evil. It may well be that this criminal might hesitate to kill somebody in order to get what he wants. But the forseeable consequence of pulling a realistic-looking gun on a store clerk is that the store clerk will draw a gun and begin shooting. The criminal's behavior could likely have resulted in his own death, the death of his mother, or the death of a customer in the store. The criminal simply doesn't care and there is no "help" that will make him care.

Thank goodness his momma was sane.
You wouldn’t believe how many robbers are turned in by their mothers or other close family members. They want the reward. ;o)
