A Canadian study released Wednesday found that many provinces in our neighbor to the North have seen patients fleeing the country and opting for medical treatment in the United States.
The nonpartisan Fraser Institute reported that 46,159 Canadians sought medical treatment outside of Canada in 2011, as wait times increased 104 percent more than double compared with statistics from 1993.
Specialist physicians surveyed across 12 specialties and 10 provinces reported an average total wait time of 19 weeks between the time a general practitioner refers a patient and the time a specialist provides elective treatment the longest they have ever recorded.
In 2011, Canadians enrolled in the nations government-dominated health service waited long periods of time for an estimated 941,321 procedures. As many as 2.8 percent of Canadians were waiting for treatment at any given time, according to the Institute.
In some cases, these patients needed to leave Canada due to a lack of available resources or a lack of appropriate procedure/technology, according to the Institute. In others, their departure will have been driven by a desire to return more quickly to their lives, to seek out superior quality care, or perhaps to save their own lives or avoid the risk of disability.
Increases in the number of patients leaving Canada for treatment were seen in seven of the ten Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Some of these patients will have been sent out of country by the public health care system due to a lack of available resources or the fact that some procedures or equipment are not provided in their home jurisdiction, the report concluded.

And to think that those who passed Obamacare will not have to be subjected to it.
How elitist can those congresscritters get.
when everyone has healthcare, no one has it.
Where will the Canadians go when US wait times are worse than in Canada?
Wealthy folks who pay cash will go to boutique medical facilities in the Caribbean, especially when Dr visits can be combined with tourism.
You’ll see branches of Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, etc setting up in whatever country gives them the best deal.
It will become a thriving business.
Young physicians should be looking at this as a tremendous business opportunity.
Socialism is not about achieving effective results, it is about government power. The results do not matter, only the promises.
You can bet they will. It will be a good deal for them to renounce their US citizenship, move to a tax friendly country and set up shop. That will increase wait times here as new docs leave and old docs retire. Thanks Obamacare.
He's right - the healthcare given to the Cuban Nomenklatura is top shelf.
Beats me. I’ve been plagued with what I would have thought was a simple rash for six months and I get shuffled from doc to doc, with long waiting times between. Each looks at me for two minutes, writes a different prescription, pats me on the bum, and sends me on my way.
Last week I started seeing a Shaman (chinese doc/acupuncturist) and actually got what seemed like an intelligent diagnosis based on the symptoms, not the dogma. And it seems as if she might help. Too early yet to tell.
Of course, the other guys/gals were all “free” health care, whereas I have to pay for the “Shaman” myself.
This is the Canadian health care system. I’m in Calgary and would be considered in good health for a guy just turned 60 last weekend, other than fat and too much booze...
Please don’t go down this route.
Cheers,
Jim
My mothers father said the choice was stay in the Maritimes and starve or get Yanktified and thrive. He also said when I asked him why did didn’t go back to canukistan to visit, his answer was, âFâm they know where I live.â
The only people acting surprised when this happens will be Democrats, LOL.
Of course, I meant the health care route, not the too fat and too much booze route. I recommend it highly!!
Cheers,
Jim
This is a dirty secret nobody seems to notice. Basically our current system props-up a lot of socialized healthcare systems around the world, notably Canada because its close by.
Today, if you live in France, England or Canada, you know that you always have an option to go to the US for a hip replacement or heart surgery and pay out of pocket if needed. At least you can get it fixed and not be dead!
For decades Canadians have come here for surgeries that they would have to wait years to get or never get at all in Canada. This ‘safety valve’ has prevented their system from collapsing completely. Once we go to rationing, they are as screwed as we are. The people will really start to notice how unworkable the system is.
“Where will the Canadians go when US wait times are worse than in Canada?”
The Affordable Care Act with its requirement for everyone to have a Patient Identity effectively prohibits foreigners from coming to the USA for treatment.
Reports indicate that Moore went to Cuba about 5 years ago to have his stomach stapled. Now that he's down to a svelte 180 it's obvious they did a damn good job.

Congress shall pass no law granting its members free meals, beverages, or other incidental expenses. Congress shall not pass any law granting its members free travel anywhere except to their home district a maximum of 12 times per year by commercial carrier.
It could be called "The Anti-Congressional Entitlement Amendment."
The Obama drones don't get it. It is not about health care. It is about power and control. The drones will happily give Obama the razor to slit their throats.
Yes, but we will all have a little card saying we have health insurance! Won’t that be dandy?
Congress shall pass no law.
