NAACP crowd calls Romney 'demeaning,' 'insulting'
The Washington Examiner ^ | July 11, 2012 | Susan Ferrechio

HOUSTON - NAACP officials described Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's morning address to the nation's most prestigious civil rights group as demeaning and insulting.

A three-quarters full auditorium greeted Romney with lukewarm applause, but the atmosphere quickly grew increasingly tense as Romney made the case that President Obama's economic policies have not helped the black community. He cited the jump in unemployment among African Americans from 13.6 percent to 14.4 percent in June.

"If equal opportunity in America were an accomplished fact, then a chronically bad economy would be equally bad for everyone," Romney told the civil rights group's annual gathering. "Instead, it's worse for African Americans in almost every way."

Clayola Brown, the member of the NAACP's National Board of Directors who invited Romney to speak, said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee should not have used unemployment numbers to try to turn the crowd against Obama.

"It was insensitive and quite demeaning as a matter of fact," Brown told The Washington Examiner after Romney exited the stage. "Certainly we are aware of what the numbers are and the impact is in our communities. It's the dialogue used that we find insulting."

Brown said the point of inviting Romney to the convention wasn't to give him a chance to win over African American voters who overwhelmingly backed Obama in 2008 and are expected to vote for him again this fall. Instead, Romney was invited to "show respect to the organization," she said.

Another board member, Amos Brown, of San Francisco, called Romney's address, "an insult to the NAACP," including his references to the importance of family.

"For him to come here and lecture us about the family - he doesn't need to be talking to Negros about that," Brown said. "Who tore up the family?"

This was IMHO a smart move by Romney. He gave the proper speech and actually should some backbone. Win-Win for him.
Can’t stand this group of racists that he spoke to though. Wonder if they had to pay some to show up and sit though it. God knows, for most of them it falls on deaf ears.

Of course they found it insensitive, demeaning and insulting. He told a bunch of people who want to survive on handouts that he'd do things that would help them get to work for a living.

the Ku Klux Klan should invite Brown to one of their meetings so she can show them respect. they deserve it about as much as the NAACP.

Romney is doing what he has to do....

too bad the NCAAP is full of such jerks and political hacks...

besides....he was talking to a small percentage of blacks who might actually use their brains and realize what a disaster obamey has been....admittedly, a few....

obamey needs the white vote....the conservatives, the patriots, the republican, the southern democrats, the independents....

of course he needs freepers too but what are ya going to do?

Actually, AAs are extremely discriminatory about skin color. If you ask an AA to describe another AA, the first attribute described will not be a feature, but will be the shade of brown of his skin.

“It’s the dialogue used that we find insulting.”

Are the naacp “leaders” really astounded to find out that obama is their black plantation master or do they just not like having it pointed out?

Yes democrats tore up the black family and LBJ’s War on Poverty tore both black and white families, encouraging young girls to get pregnant and move out of their family home live on their own with welfare payments and food stamps.

Now I find this last sentence just plain silly.Ms.Brown knows the impact this economy is having in her community.Yet when someone points out what and who is causing it,and offers an opinion on how to fix it,she finds it insulting.

Insulting would be having the President you are defending, skip the conference, and send Joe Biden instead.

DON’T WANT TO HEAR THE TRUTH.
NOT GOING TO HEAR THE TRUTH.
SHUT UP WITH THE TRUTH.

This was a lose-lose situation.

Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cleaver said Romney should not have criticized President Obama in front of a black audience but dispproved of audience booing.

So, I presume that Cleaver will say the same thing if Obama criticizes former President Bush in front of a Caucasian audience.

Blacks can't comprehend the truth. They're still stuck in the "it's whiteys fault" mentality.

Yeah, we know .. it's WHITEY's fault. It's ALWAYS our fault because YOU PEOPLE (intentionally used) refuse to take accountability for yourselves.

Why he would go to a highly racist organization like that is beyond me. It’s as much as accepting their racial exclusive bias. It’s a disgusting organization with a hate-whitey mentality?

One thing it accomplished was to
highlight and emphasize the incredible, collective blindness and lack of the ability to see past skin color for any reason. Ninety-six percent of them can’t see past Black! In the rest of America, that would be called racsism and bigotry.

Romney went up a couple of notches in my book. He showed up and threw down some cold hard facts. He stood and delivered.

Sure, he was speaking before a mostly INSANE audience but that makes what he did even more gutsy.

I have NEVER been a big Romney supporter but I’ll support someone that wants the country to be better if he is running against someone that wants to DESTROY it.

My view is that Romney outsmarted the racist pukes that were there today. Just look at their reaction and rudeness. And now their “leaders” claim that Romney was insulting and demeaning. They booed him. Romney totally outsmarted them by making them show their true colors.

I grew up in Texas. I’ve had gobs of black friends. Some girlfriends. Most of the darn skinned people I know are great folks. I’ve never even said the “F” word. But I’ll tell you what, and Lord forgive me for saying this. For the first time in my life I look at some of these people like Sharpton, Maxine Waters, Obama, etc. and come close to thinking the “N” word to myself. Obama has brought out the worst in people. His pitting one race against another has been sickening. Same goes for his wife. Because of what they have done they have brought out the dregs in the “black” community. They have emboldened the black racists in America. And they have created white racists where there was none before.

I resent that Obama has totally botched things. What an amazing opportunity he had. He could have brought the colors together. Instead he did the opposite. What a horrid little man.

As far as the NAACP? They should not be sitting in large rooms listening to Obama or anyone else. They should take up arms. I’m serious. They should arm themselves and go to Detroit and Chicago and “advance” their people if they have to be so focused on skin color. Go to those cities and protect them from the hell they are living in.

right- but its okay for obama to blame Republicans four years running for his failed policies in order to turn people against the GOP....got it...
