Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's re-election campaign insists a "scheduling conflict" is behind the president's decision to skip this year's NAACP convention.
"We declined a few weeks ago and [the] NAACP was pleased [Vice President Joe Biden] was able to attend," a campaign official told CNN.
But the president's schedule for Thursday, released Wednesday evening, appears to be wide open with the exception of his daily briefing with senior aides and advisers.
Hilary Shelton, the NAACP Washington Bureau director and a senior vice president in the organization, said the White House never confirmed a visit.
“They were trying to work out something," Shelton said. As to why Obama could not attend, he added, "It was that something could not be moved. Something was crucial. And unfortunately, they couldn’t move it in a way they could get him here this week.”

When claiming a scheduling conflict, it is best to have something important on the schedule to back up the claim. Without the MSM in your pocket, this situation would be ridiculed from one coast to the other. But, as with the Black vote, Obama has nothing to worry about from that corner.
Deep down, Obama is a coward.
He, the White Guys token Black, cannot bear the thought that The NAACP MIGHT boo him.
I know, I know, received 96 % of the Black vote in 2008 and all that, but I am talking about just one Black standing up and shouting out a question on gays and then booing Obama.

What’s wrong with this guy? He should be over there kissing those folks’ rear ends. He’s got them and the super bi-coastal liberals, that’s it. And there are a lot more black people than super-libs. And I think the black vote matters a lot more swing-state-wise.
Is he really THAT arrogant? He’s the first black president, running for re-election, he’s no longer considered a lock to win (by ANYBODY), and yet he can’t bestir himself to speak to the annual NAACP convention. Even after he knows his rival is going to go. AND he sends the only surrogate available who has a good chance of coming off even whiter and goofier than Romney - Joe Biden. I get Biden’s appeal for blue collar white voters, but African-Americans? Where’s Michelle? Valerie Jarret? Heck, even Bill “I feel your pain” Clinton?
This, to me, just about tops all the other crazy stuff he’s done. Maybe he’s like Bush, pere = he doesn’t really want to win round 2.
I don’t know if Romney wins any votes by going, but I feel certain Obama loses votes by not showing up.
If this doesn’t illustrate exactly how much Obama and Democrats take African-American votes for granted, I don’t know what does. Obama doesn’t want to be seen hanging out with too many black people while he tries to court white blue-collar workers in Pennsylvania and Ohio (you know, those bitter Bible-thumping, gun-clinging bigots). Remember the old Mounds/Almond Joy ad: Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t. Well, with Obama, it’s: Sometimes you feel black, sometimes you won’t.
