CLEVELAND An attempted robbery took a tragic turn Tuesday, resulting in the death of the suspect and the stores owner being injured.
According to Cleveland Police Sergeant Sammy Morris, Jonathan Ward, 23 entered Abe & Sons convenience store at the corner of Cedar Avenue and 70th Street just before 2 p.m.
An altercation erupted between Ward and the stores owner, Jamal Suliaman, 35. During the fight, both men produced guns.
Sgt. Morris said the altercation, Resulted in the suspect in the robbery being shot and the store owner being shot.
Ward passed away at the scene while Suliaman was treated and released at MetroHealth Medical Center for a gunshot wound to his arm.
Police say this is not the first time a tragedy has occurred at the small store. In December 2008 two armed men entered the store wearing masks. They shot and killed another member of the family, Kamal Suliaman, 34.
Its sad, said neighbor Monica Thomas.
The suspect in Tuesdays botched armed robbery has a lengthy criminal record. Ward has had many prior run-ins with the law, with multiple charges for aggravated robbery, drug possession and carrying concealed weapons.
Family members arrived at the scene and sobbed while Wards remains were removed from the building.
Cleveland Police detectives are investigating the fatal shooting.

The inner cities are the new frontier, where the only justice you can enforce is carried on your hip. They are much more violent than the "wild" west.
Whatever is considered "tragic" about this attempted crime seems to have been omitted from the story. A career criminal finally being killed by a decent citizen is no tragedy. A treated-and-released gunshot wound to the arm is unfortunate but no tragedy. Unless one of the shots shattered a bottle of fine scotch, the journalist should have chosen a different descriptor for the events.
Wonder how many of the "family members" tried to get him to give up his criminal ways as opposed to family members who shared in the loot.

...”An attempted robbery took a tragic turn Tuesday, resulting in the death of the suspect”....
Tragic? Hardly! I’d call it good shooting by the store owner, long overdue. Urban renewal 101...
Maybe they were referring to the tragedy of the store owner getting wounded? Nah, probably not. Any time one of holder's people get's killed during the commission of a crime it's a "tragedy." I'd call it a robbery gone right (except for the store owner getting wounded)
“The suspect in Tuesdays botched armed robbery has a lengthy criminal record.”
The real tragedy here is that this turd was walking around this long.
Remains. Sounds as if he was blown to pieces. Would have been a nice touch.

Which explains why he's walking around on the street?? I guess prison is just for the bad guys.
Mr. Jonathan “Cheeks” Ward was a big time “frequent flyer”. Here is an article about him being busted by US Marshals for armed robbery outside the same store when he was 19.

So how is this a tragedy?
Tragedy is a dramatic device wherein the high and mighty are brought low through hubris. Nothing in this scene suggests that condition even remotely. Ward is not MacBeth.
