A much loved family member of mine wrote for the AP for 20 years ... before switching to newspaper writing for 30 years. So, I know you're right - they were the gold standard.
It's sad the above story was written as coming from the "AP".

The guys I knew at the AP bureau were all pros, good writers who could cover sports, business or calamities.
I almost went to work for the AP in Des Moines in 1978 when I was covering the statehouse but I was considering another profession at the time.
I bailed in 1980 for sales and marketing.
