Report: Condi Rice front-runner for Romney veep pick
The Hill ^ | July 13, 2012 | Justin Sink

Posted on 07/12/2012 7:57:31 PM PDT by CutePuppy

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has emerged as a front-runner for Mitt Romney's vice presidential nomination, according to a report Thursday by the Drudge Report. ..... < snip >

..... But during that same interview, Rice downplayed speculation that she would be chosen as Romney's running mate.

I didn't run for student council president. I don't see myself in any way in elective office, Rice told CBS This Morning on Tuesday.

The former Secretary of State said the Republican candidate had a deep bench of more willing candidates to choose from.

I'm saying there is no way I will do this, because it's really not me, I know my strengths. Gov. Romney needs to find someone who wants to run with him, Rice said. There are many people who will do it very, very well, and I'll support the ticket.

When CBS This Morning host Charlie Rose pressed Rice, noting she hadn't technically said she wouldn't accept the offer to be vice president, she was more definitive.

It's not going to happen - and no, she said. ..... < snip >

I have always liked Condi and her personal story is very impressive. I know that she was genuinely fond of and loyal to GWB. I loved GWB, too. Even though he was not a perfect POTUS, he was the right man in that role in the aftermath of 9/11, but I, for one, will be very surprised if Mitt were to pick Condi. When Obama has spent the last three and a half years blaming his own incompetence on Bush, why in the world would Romney pick as VP such a prominent member of the Bush administration? In addition, after his very successful speech at the NAACP in which he spoke to them as if he did not see the color of their skin as their most important characteristic, why would he risk being accused of pandering by picking not only a black VP but a woman? I think he is too smart for that. I know that picking someone to help carry a region of the country or a certain state is “out of vogue”, but Condi certainly would not help in that regard since she now lives in CA.

If he picks anyone other than Rubio he’s a fool. Rice will not attract any significant black votes. She will not sway women.

The kiss of death. It won’t get Romney ten Black votes. But she’s pro-abortion: hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of pro-life voters, myself included, will stay home. If he picks her, its because he doesn’t really want to win.

I love Condi to death but she is too cultured and genteel to run for elective office. Make her Ambassador to the UN (if we just have to have one).

Condi is by far smarter than any other V.P. hopeful.
She did a great job for our country so far,

I would like to see either Rubio or Ryan but she would be great to,

rice was despised by blacks for being associated with the GOP and Bush. why do it again. get someone like Allen West in there. He’s tough, he fights back and he’s un-afraid. i know the vetting process will be a bastard for him and he’ll get attacked left and right, but he knows how to handle himself. we need a little fire on that ticket!IMHO.

Rice would be a very bad choice because she is pro abortion and she didn’t do such a hot job for W.

She’s super qualified, but I don’t think she’s solidly in the Conservative camp. I never have felt she was.

It’s just a visceral feeling I have in my gut that minority candidates (any minority) have to strive twice as hard and demonstrate twice as commitment, if they want to pass for Conservatives.

There are way too many temptations for them to ‘make their career’ by yanking a rabbit out of a hat and shocking everyone with some last minute and wholly unexpected ‘about-face’!!!

As a prime example, Powell has tap-danced around like this for decades, to the point where he has made himself totally irrelevant and can be believed and trusted by NO ONE.

The massive political capital he COULD have accumulated was squandered by his perpetual and selfish insistence on riding the fence

“Make her Ambassador to the UN (if we just have to have one).”

I respectfully disagree. Make John Bolton that (or Sec. of State). He sees the UN for the dangerously anti-America/Israel, pro-terrorist organization it is, and he has no problem standing up to it.

Condi is cultured, genteel and nice, I grant you, but she is a RINO and a globalist in her views. After the extreme damage BHO has done to us in the world, we need patriots with brave hearts who won’t hesitate to stand up for American exceptionalistm AND our ally Israel’s important role for peace and safety in the world.

Good Grief - there are some winning choices out there, but Portman, Rice, Ayotte, Thune or Pawlenty would ALL be the kiss of death. IMO. I don’t like Christie overall (pro-Islam RINO), but strangely, he’d be pretty popular - no, I’m NOT recommending him.

We have a big enough challenge as it is with Mittens as the BHO challenger. VP choice is more important than usual, in this case.

RINO is an intellectually lazy term. I’d like Boulton at Sec State.

“Condi has a pretty impressive resume....we could do worse...mainly, we just need to GET RID OF bamey...”

Yes, getting rid of BHO is Job 1, and that’s why, unfortunately, Romney’s VP pick is inordinately critical this election. We do NOT need to be fighting GW Bush again this election (i.e. w/a Condi pick) on top of Mitten’s other weaknesses and liabilities. We DO need a superior and passionate communicator (if MR wants to win badly enough to keep his ego/need to be “the star” from clouding his judgment) and of the names “they’re” considering, Rubio would be the wisest choice.

Portman and Pawlenty are too milquetoast/bland/boring to win mass votes. Ryan is very sharp & articulate but he’s mainly a numbers guy and the left have painted him as heartless. Christie can be fiery and gutsy, but his size will turn off the millions of superficial, young voters (not to mention that most of US don’t want him for RINO and pro-Islam reasons).

Good, well-spoken conservatives like Rand Paul or Allen West? Won’t happen. Ditto with Newt or Palin.

It’s a terrible problem with MR as our nominee apparent, and we don’t know just how stupid his campaign is (but it’s not looking good so far).

“The massive political capital he COULD have accumulated was squandered by his perpetual and selfish insistence on riding the fence”

What an understatement - he endorsed BHO, for God’s sake. After learning most of his views and statements over time, I can’t believe he hasn’t already changed parties!

“RINO is an intellectually lazy term. I’d like Boulton at Sec State.”

If one believes in the “legs of the stool” of traditional Republicanism as Reagan described, RINO is a succinct and clear term.

I’ve long said Bolton would be an excellent Sec. of State - but I know his views on the UN and his knowledge of its inner workings when he was temporary Ambassador to the UN - he’d be good at that as well.

RINO is too subjective a term and I believe that the legs of the stool refer to conservatism.
