The media initially described him as "white" and Al Sharpton assumed that he was Jewish because of his surname, so he became automatically a bad guy.

Zimmerman is one-half white, 3/8ths Hispanic, and 1/8th black. So why would be be prejudiced against any of those groups?

Homer Plessy, who was a party to the famous 1896 Supreme Court case which OK'd "separate but equal," was only one-eighth black (that was relevant to the case--he claimed that because he was 7/8th white he should be able to sit in the "white" car). Jeremiah Wright, Valerie Jarrett, and Eric Holder all may have a lower proportion of African ancestry than Zimmerman does. But because he was labeled "white" by the media they could send him to prison for 25 years or more for acting in self-defense.
