Barrie residents still displaced by explosives find (Canada)

BARRIE, Ont. -- Dozens of residents in this central Ontario city remain barred from their homes as local and provincial police continue their investigation into a three-decade-old murder case.

Police were forced to issue an evacuation order for 22 homes after the probe into the unsolved slaying of Michael Traynor led to the discovery of a cache of explosive devices and unidentified chemicals.

The evacuation order went into effect on Thursday night, hours after a local father and son were arrested for the historic crime.

Donald Feldhoff, 54, has been charged with first-degree murder in Traynor's death, while his 75-year-old father William has been charged as an accessory after the fact.

The pair were arrested at a local home found to contain at least six homemade explosive devices, said Barrie police Const. Angela Butler.

Police have enlisted the help of investigators from Toronto to identify the chemicals found in the home, she added.

"It's a very slow process for safety concerns for the officers inside," Butler said in a telephone interview. "They need to do their jobs slowly and safely and use the skills that they have available to them."

I spent a night in upper Canada in January 2011.When I woke up at 8AM it was -31F.I don't know what this is in Celsius but I promise you that I wasn't enjoying Upper Canada at that moment....actually,not until my car warmed up.Amazingly,it started however. ;-)

Ha, ha, ha. That Molson plant was sold years ago. Some wiseguys bought it and were running a huge grow op before they got caught.

For those who don't know, this was a large brewery right next to a main highway.

BTW- -31F is -35C. The two intersect at -40.

-35C is cold. What is worse is when the windshield fluid rated to -40 freezes up (windchill). I usually have some -50 (-68F)for the cold parts of the winter.

It is good to have some one to snuggle with for warmth on those cold nights—our fifth kid is on the way.

We (assuming the identity of my wife and kids—I’m an ex-pat) also have a federal government that has run surpluses recently, and will almost certainly do so again by 2015. There are many upsides—

but most importantly I’m presently enjoying my Upper Canada Rebellion Lager ice cold—not -35, but probably -2. I don’t touch Molson except under social duress. And I never drink mainstream American “Beer”.

Understood.Upsides like:a relative handful of people,civilized English speaking people (yes,the French speaking ones are civilized too),living in a huge country awash in natural resources,sharing a land border with a single nation,that nation also being prosperous and civilized,having to spend a relatively small sum on defense thanks to the power of that southern neighbor,and not having a history of slavery.

Well, there are territorial spats up north and over fishing rights, so the U.S. isn’t the only country Canada needs to worry about, but it has nothing like the U.S. commitment.

On the other hand, if the U.S. was not so committed to making the world safe for democracy, (see how that has worked out) a ton of money would be saved. As far as neighbors go, the U.S. has a very long history of mixing things up in Mexico—Fast and Furious is by no means the first time the U.S. has helped to destabilize Mexico not for the intent of destabilizing Mexico but for the sake of advancing U.S. domestic political agendas.

The French thing does pose its own problems.

As far as neighbors go, the U.S. has a very long history of mixing things up in Mexico...

I,and many others here,would vigorously support the complete sealing of our side of the US/Mexico border...nothing and nobody crosses the border in either direction.Those wanting to travel from the US to Mexico can do so via Canada (if the Canadian gov't allows it) or via another country (Caribbean Islands,etc).

I hope Canada doesn't seal *our* border.Then I'd be denied my daily ration of the Red Green Show!

Upper Canada is my second choice among what is available at the Beer Store here (my first is Wells in 2-Litre format)—micro-brews are not very available in my area. Creemore is the only other thing I buy from the Beer Store—given your recommendations, I trust that you have been to Creemore.

Still, given that the thread was taken on a beer angle by someone praising Canadian beer by citing Molson, I thing Upper Canada isn’t bad—though it was much better under the previous ownership when it was being produced in Parkdale. Their stout was my favourite—unfortunately I haven’t seen it in years.

I prefer the LCBO to the Beer Store—with this being my preferred option (the area is Polish so we have a good selection of Polish beers)

It is good for a mass-produced beer.

To all of these options, I prefer my own homebrew, but with many little kids, it hasn’t been produced for several years.
