Topeka police have identified the man shot and killed Thursday night during what they called an intrusion into a home, something they said was not “a random act.”

Cpt. Jerry Stanley on Friday afternoon identified the deceased as Cyril K. Smith, 31. Stanley said Smith was one of at least two men who entered a residence at 1812 S.E. Pennsylvania shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday. Several residents were in the house at the time, Stanley said, and gunshots fired from within the house struck and killed Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet identified any of the residents of the house.

“The motive for the intrusion is still being determined,” Stanley said in a Friday afternoon press statement. “However, there is no indication that this was a random act or that the public is in any danger.”

Stanley said police continue to seek at least one other person in the case. Officers executed a search warrant earlier Friday at 2045 S.W. MacVicar in relation to the case.

“Several witnesses, persons of interest and suspects have and continue to be interviewed,” Stanley said. No arrest had been made as of 5 p.m. Friday.

Police held the Pennsylvania address as a crime scene until shortly after 2 p.m. Friday as part of their investigation. The body of the deceased remained on the premises until around 8:15 a.m. as crime scene investigators processed the area.

“Most of the Detective Bureau and many other resources at the TPD have been working on this case to uncover the events leading up to the death of one of the intruders,” Stanley said. “We appreciate the public’s support and understanding during this process. I know there are many questions, but this is a complicated case that requires exhaustive efforts through the evening and weekend.”

Stanley asked that anyone with information about the crime to contact Sgt. Volle at 368-9413, or Det. Arensdorf at 368-9420. Information also can be submitted anonymously by calling CrimeStoppers at 234-0007.

Ah, thanks. I’ve been hoping for one of these! I haven’t read a good one for a couple days.

Could it be the same Cyril K. Smith as this one, from the next state over:

I think it is the same guy. Here is a mug from Topeka. Wonder why he wasn’t still in jail. Wonder which judge let him out.
