I beg to differ regarding the speed, but won’t comment further.

LOL. Me, too.

I've been on that exact ship when it was going "in excess" of the mentioned speed.

Interesting in ‘94 on Indy we got caught between two typhoons that turned on us instead of heading their forecasted directions. We saw 100+ knot winds and took white water over the bow (flight deck I should say). CAG commented that we could launch with that wind while heading astern (we only needed 20 knots min as I recall). Pulled in all watches despite being lashed in. A japanese destroyer lost her mast, a US destroyer or FFG lost her sonar dome, our emergency helo had a tied down blade folded back ‘vertically’ (winds were too high to fold normally per procedure). We took rolls of 25-30 throughout making the mess decks a “happy place” where they only served on paper for 2 days. As a true SWO LT I was loving life, but the CO thought I was maybe enjoying it too much...good memories...

The carrier looks pretty stable.

Oh yeah, it’s a LOT dryer than a tin can. The difference is, if a destroyer broaches it’s an annoyance and wastes fuel. If a carrier broaches, it can be serious, especially during flight operations.

Back in the ‘80s a buddy of mine was an instrument tech who serviced 688s and boomer subs. We were watching some schlock documentary about subs and they tossed out a factoid that the maximum dive depth of the 688 was 900’. My buddy almost rolled off the couch laughing.

"That’s jamming for craft that large."

Yep, to put it in perspective, my old 16', fiberglass Skeeter bass boat -- pushed by a 50hp Evinrude, -- would be hard pressed to keep up with it -- in dead-calm water...

High speed turns are SOP for all boats during both sea trials and normal underway maneuvering.

Even CWIS(sic) has its limits.

That would be CIWS.

How much time have you logged serving in a battle group?

Carriers are obsolete.

Those geniuses in the chair force as well as the SecDef made the same idiotic claim back in the 40s.

Zero, and as you noted I do occasionally make a typo. Care to address the substance of my point? They’re vulnerable. Remember the Kitty Hawk getting caught with its pants down a few years ago? I wonder how many hours that Chinese crew had in CVBGs. No doubt their opinions as to carrier vulnerability (and US complacency) were also irrelevant. Never mind what other navies have done to our carrier groups in war games over the years. Maybe it’s all just disinformation on our part, or maybe we’ll never again face an enemy capable of counterpunching, but it makes me nervous.

sorry not a pilot..Aviation Ordnance F-4s & cat arming and dearming crews...always on the flight deck though. Saw some many strange things happen including loss of life of our CAG during my 3 tours in Viet Nam. Some fond memories and some not so good. Seen a lot of things in the pilots eyes on their return from their missions. SAMS had a way of getting your attention from time to time. High speed and low drag to ya.
